i've been putting it in my rallycar (admittedly not a scoob but it gets the t!ts screwed off it none the less) for the 6000 miles since the last rebuild and no problems to date, oil pressure is as good now as when the motor was just run in.
It gets revved to 7500rpm most of the time and the last motor, which i ran on mobil 1 motorsport 15w50 (but i don't think was built as well) only lasted 3000 miles.

Halfords oil is made by elf.

thanks, think I'll give it a go. they say its manufactured to the same specification as all the other fully synthetic stuff and is a damn sight cheaper - £24 instead of £36-40 for 5 litres

It was supposed to be wisdom, but it was covered in a previous post and I missed it.

I'm a bit of a cheapskate too, so I'd probably use it at least once too...

The oil will have to at least meet the standards printed on the container, or Halfords will have a few problems on their hands...

I wasnt saying I was a cheapskate - if its manufactured to the same standard as Motul for example shouldnt it be as good. I just wondered if anyone had experienced any particular problems using a own brand oil such as Halfords. Personally I will try it but don't hold out much hope if my engine gets fcuked as a result that Halfords could be held responsible.

Why don't you try it first! (joke). Gotta top mine up tonight as its on minimum so I guess some oil is better than not putting any in at all!

Big thread about this a long time ago! It's made by Comma.
Are you sure about 15/40? The full syn. is 5/40?

Could be 5w/40 but thought I'd read that was too thin an oil. Will check again later

I was shown, as I debated purchasing mobil stuff, on the Halfords computer (3 years ago now)
that this fully synthetic oil was made by Esso.

it had a re-order name and address - and as said (3 years ago), it was definately Esso.

I have used in previous cossies/saab turbos - and never had any probs.

Not saying that the Halfords oil is necessarily worse than a more expensive brand like Motul but although it's manufactured to the same standards, the more expensive oil may exceed these standards by a greater amount than the Halfords oil. Some people on S'net seem to have detected differences between running 2 different oils in their cars when both were relatively expensive.
I've read motorbike mag articles referring to 2-stroke oils ( the principal is the same here tho') where they were running a bike on a dyno and testing out various engine mods. A top of the range race-spec oil had the engine running cooler and smoother than a very-good-but-just-below-race-spec oil.
I reckon that a Subaru engine will be happy enough on the cheaper one but the more expensive one will reduce, by a tiny bit, the stress that is put on it. Normal day to day running - both oils probably fine, stress the engine near to the max then the expensive oil does a slightly better job. However performing more frequent oil changes with the cheaper oil than the more expensive oil probably balances things out !

Esso own Comma so you are both right. Esso is Exxon Mobil now anyway.

The Mobil 1 available through Subaru dealers for the Impreza was 5W-40 so it should be suitable for normal use.
