Cool

Does anyone know why Subaru decided to make the IC Water Injection manual on the STI 8 instead of auto like on the STI 7 ?

Does anyone know how to make it automatic, without losing the warrenty ?

Personally I am to busy driving to be pissing about with switches under the dash at the times when it would actually be of any use to me.

It seems to me that a feature that used to be worthwhile has been changed into a useless switch whose only function is bragging rights down the pub.

Wink

My STi8 has a manual button and an auto button. It's a JDM version though.

Speak to Sumo Power, ask for Rob or Mark, and tell them Mark (CTRnutter) told you to speak to them.

the part you want is the Do-Luck IC Spray sytem, it costs about £120.00 and you control how many shots of water are sprayed on the car how long the sprays last and what temprature the car has to be for it to come on,

warranty isn't effected as this isn't a performance enhancing mod, in the extreme sense, in other words this will not shorthen the life of the cars engine and will not be putting any strain on the car.

the problem is deciding where to put the display for the device

Just added a few bits to the car as it seems to struggle when its warm, but they have this kit in especially for the new scoob and evo

http://www.sumopower.com/

the display isn't really a display, just a little box with a dial allowing the adjustment of the amount of water sprayed and a dial for what temp it comes on !!

the guys at Sumo will be able to adivse better than me but they might even have one which comes without a display !

Thanks Mark,

Just contacted them and it is a straight switch replacement with one additional wire to the ECU.

Now does anyone know why Subaru decided to make the UK STI 8 switch manual ?

Mike Wood from Prodrive has stated it is actually automatic, the fact it doesn't empty the tank quickly means it isn't needed.
Anyone noticed it emptying ever?

I am sure that the manual that comes with the car states that it is a maual switch.

I will check when I get home tonight.

There is a manual switch, but that is purely an overide. Waste of space of course..unless you are trying to lose a bit of heat whilst stuck in traffic.

So with the switch turned off water will be sprayed onto the intercooler as required ?

Is this documented anywhere, or is there anywhere where I can get further information on this.

Question

I'm confused. I've just checked in the manual (latest version for 03 models - until recently the 03 cars came with the 02 manual) and there is no mention of automatic operation, just a brief comment saying it operates for 2 secs. when you press the button.

I agree no mention is made of it being automatic. I am merely repeating what 'the guy from Prodrive' said. I haven't had to refill mine ever..but then I rarely drive it anyway, thats the wife's job

Hmm, Someone told be it was automatic also, but my car felt very flat today on the motorway. I've never checked the tank in the boot, i'll take a look later today.

wasnt mike talking about the STi7 chuck? I dont recall him ever talking about the STi8 IC spray system. The USDM STi has a manual function only, that is heavily based around the STi8.

The STI8 is automatic If its not how does mine empty as I don't push the button at all.

Like some ones already posted, it only uses water when required. When its low and using water the ic light on the dash board comes on telling you to refill (best us deionized (sp?) water as it will not clogg the jets up). You get an idea how much its on when low as you see light on, low gears and hard boost uses most, further up the gear box uses less water.

My car is a UK STI8 and I checked the water tank this morning, it is still full to the brim so there is no way that it has an automatic function. Also the owners manual states that it is a manual button that delivers water for approx 2 seconds, no mention is made of an automaic function.

As the only time that you need the water spray is when you are giving it large a fully manual system is about as much use as t*ts on a bull as that is not the best time to be fumbling under the dash trying to press the right button.

Hence my desire to convert it to automatic operation. I have found a company that can supply the required parts and have asertained that it is a minor modification. The only question I still need answered is what will it do to my warrenty. To this end I have asked my local dealership to fit the part and guarentee that my warrenty is not effected, I await there response.

Simo,

Is yours a UK STI8 or an import ?

How many miles do you do before you have to top up the tank ?

Do you ever press the IC button ?

I can use this information when I take the car in for 1st service 'cause one of us has a faulty system as mine does not use a drop of water.

Thanks

Mike

its not auto !!! we have even the kit to prove it, I will take pics when we collect the car this week after the work has been done !! also I doubt that such a reputable dealer as Sumo Power are going to talk absolute rubbish either !!!

if its auto then why isn't it stated in the manual, do they fit it to some cars and not others ??? I find it very hard to beleive that the car would not have used it once over this very hot period that we are having especially when given some stick !
