Am i Crazy?

Before you hit reply and say 'Yes' please keep reading
Ive had my MY03 PPP for 3 months now and done about 5300 miles.
I started out using super unleaded fuel and i get good fuel economy (~28mpg) but i get a big flat spot between about 4 and 5k.
I then went on to Optimax, gave it about 3 tank full to 'retrain' but the flat spot is worse the fuel economy is worse (~24mpg) and it seems to have a brick wall a 6k.
Ive now reverted to STANDARD Unleaded and my problems with flat spots and brick walls have gone, i can quite happily go to 6.5k before changing and fuel economy is not bad (~27mpg).
Do you guys think im crazy running 95ron?

Well of course you'll sorta "lose" the flat spot. Lower octane fuel burns more easily. Well imagine you're boosting and you're cylinder temp goes up like mad.

Hercules,
The original guy who posted has gone SUL - Optimax then down to 95 Ron !!!
I never had a flat spot on my 01 scoob PPP.
Seems unusual to me at that revs, take it back mate

Katana: Always thought its been pinking from about 3.5k, but apparantly they all do that and its not pinking its the swizzdodle (custom subaru only)
Steve777: Done on at least 4 occations, luckily its a company car. Unfortunate for the next buyer (20 months time)
hercules29: What super are you using?, near me ive tried Texico & *cough*<sainsburys>*cough*

I have an 03WRX PPP and find it runs much better on Super Unleaded than Optimax, but there is a slight 'flattening out' of the torque curve between 4-5k, and then when you hit 5k you get a second wind. It's fairly subtle but it is there.
If you download the PPP literature from the Prodrive site it actually shows the torque curve peaking around 3k then dipping slightly before peaking again at 5k. It's not the cleanest torque curve you'll ever see
Maybe this is what you are feeling?

I have same problem with WRX03 PPP flat spot at 4500 revs runs out of puff as it gets past 6000 revs makes no difference running sul or optimax. Have been back to the dealer as someone suggested on here to clear any fault codes that ecu may have and they found none, the only time it feels better is if i turn the air con off and it does run much cleaner through the rev range. The frustrating thing is that the flat spot at 4500 is intermitant and you just know that when you take it to the dealer it wont be doing it just sods law.Once again it is still a fantastic car and I always have great fun and enjoyment from the car and this small problem should not put off anybody going WRX with PPP it still is a fantastic pakage IMHO

Blip,
Its definately a 'hole' as it will 'flutter' at the same time. If prodrive is looking at this thread it would be nice to have graphs for 95/97/98ron in the PDF (surely they have them?) as they only 'recommend super unleaded' this my put my mind at ease.
Maybe theres enough det happening with NUL that the ECU compensates for but SUL & Optimax it cant hear it (cos its not bad enough) therfore not compensating?

DBY - I know what you mean about the aircon. I'm surprised how much it saps the power, and can cause jerky respone on a part throttle.
I always hit mine off if I need all the horses to get past something
