Angry

Just drove up the road from my house and within 200 yards there was a huge bang and my windscreen shattered (spider-webbed) and has a impact hole in it.

Nothing hit the windscreen and I was only going about 15mph (very weird - me going 15mph, not the windscreen shattering!!).

Has this happened to anyone else or am I the only freak here

thanks

No but it makes a whining noise at 90mph in a head wind - and I cant go over 140mph without risking the bonnet flying up! (Aluminium one)

Wink

I was told that the whistling that happens at 120mph - 130mph was the wing mirrors - as i thought it was the windscreen.......don't know if that is of any interest to you

Mate, could only have been a pellet gun or catapult for that to happen, esp. if there is an impact hole. See if you can find a pellet in the car.

What a headf**k!!!

Ed,
I'm just completely freaked out - no pellets or stones or anything that could have done it near the car - we were looking around the car for about half an hour.

Hope it never happens to anyone else as it shocked the sh*t out of me and the missus.

If I had a weak heart, it would have given me a heart attack - and I'm not joking, it was a really loud bang

Happened to my wife a few years back as she was reversing out of our drive. Whole rear screen shattered and centered around a small impact hole. Never found any pellets or anything but it was like she had been shot at.

There are some real dumb asses out there.

If it was an air rifle the pellet would have deformed and more than likely would have bounced of the window. It would not have had the power to penetrate the toughened glass of your windscreen also with your window being sloped its probably in the hedge somewhere.

This happened to me in a previous car, as I was towing my caravan past a slow lorry on the A1.
It turned out to be a lorry wheelnut and stud that had sheared off. It came through the windscreen, hit me, then my son in the back, but luckily no-one was injured.
Even more luckily, I was wearing sunglasses, so none of the powdered glass that cam into the car went into my eyes!
I still have the wheelnut, it weighs about a quarter of a pound at least. Some projectile!!

Thought we were going to lose our windscreen last week, was doing around 70mph and were hit by a bird Very loud bang but windscreen (MY02) not marked. The bird didn't explode luckily so apart from the shock of the hit no ill effects.......well, for us at least, I suspect the bird won't be doing it again.

The windscreen chap has just turned up and he said he has never seen anything like it before - said it must have been a very large object with the projectory coming from high up, as in falling from the sky.....but he can't be 100%!!!

Either that or someone had just watched JFK

Really weird

No lorries about, no bridges to launch anything from, just motorway. Never heard anything hit it either!!. Strange..... [Automated by GetSmile]

only about 10 - 15mph, which is weird anyway

The windscreen chap just said that something definately hit it though, not a fault or freak occurance.

Could have been an ice shard from a plane, or a small piece of rock from outer space.

Seriously

Sounds to me like a powerful air rifle, as was mentioned. Probably difficult to find the pellet.

Yoza - I hope you hunted the git down and beat him like the dog that he is for shooting a car, let alone a Scoob.

The bird dropping a stone sounds like the most logical answer, but I now have a new windscreen (fitter just finished), and will probably never find out what happened

Oh well, at least its now sorted

Yep, this happened to me, not in my Scoob though.
Driving along a main road, no car infront of me, or coming the other way, huge bang..big brown trouser moment..

Windscreen was totally shattered/cracked..but, no damage on the outside of the glass, totally smooth to the touch...
weird !

This happened to me in my old Beetle, a stone must have been chucked up, very loud bang and.......zero visibility. The windscreen was the original, not toughened. The whole thing shattered into what amounted to rather more than a few hundred 5mm sqaure chunks. It stayed in place aswell, till I knocked a small hole through which I could see to pull over safely.

It felt like an age before I seemed to react to knock a hole, but in reality, looking back it was very quick reaction indeed to process the problem and work out a solution. The human mind amazes me sometimes.

African swallow dropping a coconut?

Wierd. Could it just have been a badly manufactured screen that gave up when the chassis moved slightly?

Question

That sounds like someones been taking potshots with an air gun as a bonded screen would only crack and not explode!

Can remember, many moons ago, at a Bracknell campsite, a VW campers windscreen popping due to there being a Heathrow flightpath overhead, happened quite regularily apparently.

Didn't one make of car have problems with it rear windows just exploding for no reason on cold mornings ? It was a while back.

Was something to do with the fact that as the rear heater element warmed up a very cold piece of glass there was enough expansion room (or something) and the glass just exploded out of its frame.

Maybe something similar ?

Cheers

Ina
