My Wife's selling her Clio privately to make way for an 03 GX Sportswagon. She rang Tesco tonight to ask the insurance to be changed from just the 2 of us, to all drivers. She was told the increase would be £10 extra per month, but she'd lose her no claims is she did it... Tesco's advice was to make sure we only let people who had fully comp insurance to drive any car, have a test drive!

Is this normal? Surely not?

Any advice as to how to sort this, will be gratefully received, as we'll lose about £1000 on the deal if we have to trade in, rather than sell privately.

Cheers

Surely someone has experience of selling a car privately...? How did you work the insurance for the test drive?

Cheers

as far as im aware your insurance will usually cover you to drive anyones car but with third party only cover, does this help?

just re-read your message & understand you a bit more now, if the person who wants a test drive drives already, they must have insurance cover on there previous car which should entitle them to 3rd party on anyones car, you could just remove yourself as named driver for a day & replace it with the person who wants a test drive, this should just incur a minimal charge.

That's a good idea Andy; will try it. Ton - thanks for the reply, but wouldn't take the risk of them crashing it or getting caught lying.

Well you could 'phone the insurance on-the-day and put Mr Punter on cover for just the day.

Similar but kind-of not to what happens when you want a courtesy car from a garage and they want your insurance to cover it.

Thanks for the help guys.

Just phoned Tesco to have a winge and I persuaded them to only temporarily suspend the no claims. They said they'd cover any driver for 1 month for an extra £38, which isn't so bad!

We just need potential buyers now!

Cheers
