Rear Number Plate

I have a 96 WRX STi. The rear number plate is on a sort of door affair that opens through 90%. There doesn't appear to be anything behind it that you would need to get to. Anyone know why?
I'd like to be able to raise it and lower it from in the car when I'm in camera territory
