The wife and two children of one of my friends was in a nasty car crash yesterday. Fortunately the two children are fine and the wife's worst injury was burns from the air bag going off.

She was driving along a country road. As she starts making her way around a low vis bend a van driver comes flying round, over the white lines because he is going too fast, and BANG!

Takes off the drivers side wing, front wheel, door etc., and sends the car off into a field. The car is a complete wreck. It is one of those rare miracle moments where everyone walked away.

When I was told yesterday what happened, depsite there being no serious casulties, it gave me a real sinking feeling. I thought about it all day and although I enjoy a spirited drive I don't consider myself to be reckless. But still, it really does hit home how dangerous the road is, especially when this happens to someone you know.

Thought I would post this up. Well worth a reminder now and again to just take a few minutes and consider your actions when enjoying your car. Life hangs by a fine balance sometimes.

About a mile from my house almost the exact same thing happened, to my next door neighbours apprentice 18 year old mechanic

Only sadly, in front of the other car (2 Adults, and 3 children watching) the mechanics car burst into flames, and he died whilst trying to get out of the car

Horrible way to go, and a mental image scarred on the 3 children who watched in horror, as it happened

Spirited drive is such a stupid phrase. People can dress it up all they like but:

Spirited drive = driving quickly = more than likely speeding.

Does spirited drive mean driving quickly but within the limits and in control?

Spirited drive, making progress etc... It's all the same.

Say what you mean.

 

Speeding in itself is not dangerous. Spirited drive in my book does not mean going round a blind bend on the wrong side of the road, that is a dangerous drive. Spirited driving should still be within your/the car's capabilities.

 

The reference to "spirited driving" was meant to be tongue in cheek as it is a bit of a favourite on SN.

My post wasn't meant to dress anything up. I won't lie or spout any holier than thou crap. I am as guilty as the next man for occassionaly breaking the law when enjoying my car. Whether you are out on a run in the Scoob, or off to work in your wagon, I don't believe anyone who says they never, ever break the law.

The point of my post was simply to make you stop and think for a moment. No holier than thou, not a lecture, not trying to dictate to you how to drive - simply a thought provoker. Personally I find incidents like this help me to be remain mindful of the harsh realities of RTAs, and thus considerate of my actions.

Followed some twot yesterday driving his BM erratically (DONT THEY ALL)

See's me in his mirror and gets all silly like..

He pulls round a corner and continues @ 5 mph - I think whats this idioit doing ?


then he floors it off??? I splat the throttle in response


Then notice he's got small heads in back (one or two KIDDIES)

I pull back and let him speed off - what an idiot

Unsafe / spirited driving with kids on board= complete nonse


I do like to blast a bit but... Makes you think twice...
