WRX or STI
#1
Had a drive of the Stan Palmer Demo WRX but found it lacked in the mid range department.
Now will be buying a second hand, probable bug eye, if I go ahead.
I am concerned about running costs of the STI. I do approx 300 miles per week.
How does the STI compare to the WRX (THe Stan Palmer demo car has a superchips mod to 265bhp)
Any thought/views would be appreciated

Most people report that the STI with PPP is better than a standard STI. The reason being with more low down grunt you don't need to thrash it so much, and can stay in higher gears.
I do around 200 predominantly commuting urban miles per tank, stop start average speed 10mph to a tank. A long run up the motorway at say 80mph, overtaking up to 90 returns nearer 300 miles to a tank.
A tank is currently £38 of Optimax. I never let it run till the light comes on.
My prev MY01 WRX was no better than the STI, that was standard except SS backbox.
In the real world, you would expect to average what the manufacturer claims as its urban mpg figure.

i have no STIvWRX comparison ... but i would guess we are talking small % points on WRX+ppp vs STI vs STI+PPP.
my STI+PPP is better than my plain STI but not by much and simple fact is and it's boring to keep reading/writing ... they eat juice, so deal with it in which ever way is appropriate
not much help i guess
oh yes, the stats ... i do 250-300 to 55 litres general motorway+london. i do 150-200 having fun
- mark.

The WRX lacked in the mid-range department? You must be driving something very special at present if that's what you felt in a WRX. Mine is particularly good in mi-range, and although the STI may have a slight edge in theory, it will take someone special to notice it in isolated demo. I should stick with what you already own, but please let me know what it is 'cos I may want one myself.

Whats this superchip mod?
No doubt that is the problem??
I myself would prefer the PPP to give the car 265bhp, there will be more midrange grunt and what alot of people dont understand about scoobs is that new they are as tight as a knats bits

Well Dave I currently drive a 320D Compact BMW which has a 7.5sec 50-70 in 4th which is very usable as I drive Newcastle to Carlisle every week. That bloddy A69 is a pain and you need good mid range.
Tony, Stan Palmers demo WRX has had the Superchip mod fitted as a trial. Maybee I was having a bad day, my back was in agony so that may be thee reason

I've just driven an sti with ppp and whilst its certainly more flexible and torquey it doesn't feel that much different to my standard one. I'm sure its quicker it just doesn't feel like £2,000 quicker

Standing starts can be stunning in a WRX, but I get even greater fun from the mid-range accelleration. You can view all these performance figures by visiting www.fastsaloons.com
I have found theirs to be the most accurate.

Regarding depreciation, lost loads already, can't see them losing much more for a while. In fact, check out

If you're wanting a STi7 you really won't do any better!

Depends if you want warranty or not.
Best value for money at the minute is a bugeye with decat and ecutek. So far proving to be very 'safe' and with the 5 speed box and midrange, you will all over a standard sti7 like a rash.
However the STi does have better seats and better brakes etc.
I personally dont liek the 6spd box or front diff on the sti.

AFAIK the WRX's at Stan Palmers have EcuTeK 2 / exhaust mods and not a superchip. Ian Armstrong (Stan Palmer) is pretty well up on what a Scooby will do in terms of Mods and does not take cheap short cuts.
Mine (MY02) is in with Ian this Friday having a De-cat, Ian has previously sorted out a TeK2 remap etc for me....
Give Ian a ring and have a chat...very appraochable
