I am getting one!!
#1
I am going to purchase my first Impreza as soon as i am 20 years old. I have admired these cars for years, and this year its time to get one. The insurance is still stupid amounts when i am 20 but well worth it, its a lot less that now.
I am looking to purchase an M-N Reg, it has to be a Turbo model!!
Can anyone give some advice as to what i need to look for (Bad areas), and how much i should pay!!
THANKS

Get hold of a copy of 'Glasses Guide' - then knock £500 off the trade price. I can get you a 1999 for £9k whereas they generally sell for any where between £11K to £13K on forecourts. An 'M' or 'N' plate I could possibly get for around £3.5-£4.5k.
If you are planning on selling the car in the future to upgrade to a newer model take into account the amount of previous owners, the service history (Full Subaru Service History {FSSH} is preferable), and also the colour - Sonic Blue is very sought after a it was the same colour as the rally cars, whereas green is extremely difficult to shift (according to the 2nd hand dealers).
Other advice, at your age only buy a standard car as modifications will hike the insurance price up by upto 300%. I know I've been quoted just under £1K to over £3k. (I assume you are in Nerwark, Notts, and have the normal 'NG' postcode as I do in Nottingham).
If you have 0 NCB then you are unlikely to find anyone but Tesco to give you a reasonable insurance quote (not a plug Moderators - just my experience). If you can, insure and register the car in your parents name and insure their car in your name (as long as it's cheaper to insure than the scoob e.g a Fiesta) and you could save over 66%.
If you do decide to go for a modified car then make sure you call an independant Subaru delear and give them the exact spec of the car. They will give you a valuation based on what they know they can get for it. I've seen modified 1998 cars (icluding the special edition 'Terzo') where the seller has asked for £10500 but Subaru said due to modifications it was only worth £5500.
As to what you should watch out for, I generally look at these areas:-
Check V5 - Address, chassis, engine number.
HPI Check.
Check Service History.
Make sure cambelt was changed.
Check alarm/immobiliser. Also make sure installation certificate and PIN code is there. Should be two Subaru badged transponders.
Check all lights.
Check all switches.
Check Panels for re-spray or damage.
Check inside boot for water damage around lights, spoiler, boot well.
Check alloys for kerbing.
Check tyres for inconsistent wear across width of tread.
Check interior wear is consistent with claimed mileage.
Remove radiator cap - look for ‘mayonnaise’ (oil in waterway if found).
Cold start - any blue smoke?
Brake hard from 30 or 40 mph to 0. Does it pull to one side?
Check clutch by sticking it in 5th gear and at low revs 2/3k rpm putting your foot down. If the engine revs are not consistent with the gain in speed then the clutch is worn.
Other info is available at the Subaru Impreza Drivers Club website (http://www.sidc.co.uk).
Hope that helps.

Thanks very much for all that information, i am very grateful, i will start looking in July when i am 20, i have printed off the list of things to watch out for, when i go on my hunt...
The 3.5k 4.5k prices that you mentioned sounds good to me, as long is it hasn't been to the moon and back....lol
As for insurance i got a quote from one of those places where they check loads of insurance and give you the best from there list. I managed £1800 which sounds good to me, maybe not to you guys, who pay £300 but i really want an impreza and its better than paying the £4500 that is would cost below 20.
Anyway, thanks a lot, i am sure i will be back for more advice.

The insurance broker who my Dad insures everything with in the business, he managed to find me that quote, but didnt say who it was with. I will find out because that is the policy i will take when its comes round to it.
As for putting my parents car on my insurance and the scooby on theres (Scoobywont) there cars will be more to insure, so no win there, good idea though.
Will keep you informed.

You can get quotes for around 500 or even less on an unmodified Uk turbo, just have to over 30, clean licence, FNCB(10 years), low risk postcode, unmodded car, limited mileage, only driver and garaged with loads of security.

Scooby Won't, was it an OFFICIAL dealer who offered £5500 and if so, what mods were on the Terzo?

The car in question was a MY98 'Terzo' on an S plate, 54000 miles, with modified: ECU, full S/S Exhaust, Gauges, big alloys, big spoiler, big brakes, quick shift, dump valve, hoses and a few other parts. Was for sale on this very site in Cambridge if I recall correctly.
Lucky for me I know the official traders and can therefore buy at trade prices. The only models I can't get at discounted/trade-price at present are the MY03s. Shame really as I really want a non-imported 03 STi PPP for import price. And the money is burning a hole in my pocket!
