V-Limited are only the MY99 STI limited versions the V is roman numerals for 5. The MY00 was known as the VI-limited. The 5th ratio is a bit strange as some did and some didnt, facotry option on which one to fit. The roof vent was also a factory delete option if you didnt want it, although most seem to have it.
The colour is also have various names, commonly known as sonic blue and it the same colour and the P1 and 22B and Terzo (and the old limited RA ). If you want a can of spray paint from Halfords you need to ask for New Rally Blue with a colour code of 74F.

Type R is 3 door.Comes in STI or (rare WRX) mode. STI comes in various colours. V-Ltd is Mica blue. WRX has no STI badging and should have no STI parts ,unless original owner has specified them.
All STIs have a red manifold (Easily spotted).
Type R V-Ltd has alonger 5th gear ratio.Allowing higher top speed, easier cruising.Intercooler waterspray and no ABS.
When you're looking. Check out the chassis No. This should tie in with above links MY chassis No. page
However this isn,t the whole story.
I was driven demented, trying to find out which model of car I had bought
Y'see. Apparently V-Ltds should have a small plaque just above the oddment tray (Mine don't)
It would appear our lucky Japanese friends can order what ever they like in a car (Making us go DooLally into the bargain) trying to establish, wot we got!
Mines I think is a SUBARU IMPREZA WRX STI Type-R V-Ltd Mcrae (Came with all the STI gear.Stickered up Plus STI rollcage)
Welcome to the Type R Treasure trove

Ya. Lucky Dog. At least you new what you were getting.
Mines According to chssis No. is a Type R. However is Sonic blue (mica). With roof vent. Stickered up (Mcrae & Grist).Long 5th ratio. Standard interior plus rollcage.Wossat all about.
No plaque MY Oct 98 STI V Type R.(MY starts after Sept.)
I beleive that to appease all those who missed out on the 22B SUBARU floated out some fancy Ltd editions.
Correct me if Im wrong.

Sorry Chris P, you're wrong mate. You could get V-Ltd cars as far back as Sti 2s at least... You can get WRX Type R V-Ltds and Sti, Sti Type RA and Sti Type R V-Ltds, some of which will have a longer 5th gear, others won't. It is well confusing.
In the scope of the guys question, you are asking the difference between an Sti Type R, and an Sti Type R V-Ltd correct? In which case they are basically the same, except on the V-Ltd you'll get a plaque, a roof vent, maybe quick-rack steering, and maybe a longer fifth gear, but perhaps not. These items also pop on non-V-Ltds sometimes too however (my old Sti 4 Type R had the quick rack), so basically, there is no hard and fast rule, apart from the vent and plaque I think. Also, the non-V-Ltds come in colours other than sonic blue as said. I have only ever seen Sonic V'Ltd type Rs, but there may be exceptions, you never know with Imprezas!
Hope that helps!
Edited to say you didn't specify whether you're after an Sti Type R, or a WRX Type R? If the latter, I need to give you more info...

Version 5 brochure :
http://www.ravensblade-impreza.com/d...d/sti5ra/1.jpg
Its well known mistake people calling them all V Limited but the model. Like the old STI7, STI8 wrong naming convention.
The actual name of the STI 5 RA model for MY99 was for example :
WRX Type RA STI Version V Limited
The actual name of the STI 6 RA model for MY00 was for example :
WRX Type RA STI Version VI Limited
Hope this helps
