help from P1 owners please!!!!!
#1
Hi, I'm in the process of trying to get IM to agree to give me a new rear wing. The old one's paint has flaked off around the lettering. this, so far is the second one this has happened to on my car. IM have said it is out of warranty because paint is only covered for 12 months, the wing is probably 14-18 months old. What I'm trying to establish is, has the wing got a manufacturing fault that causes the paint not to stick, as i'm sure this would have to be fixed. Have any other P1 wings suffered paint related defects? I would like to hear from P1 owners that have had similar problems of flaking paint, and then maybe IM might realise they have a real problem with these wings. I'm really fed up With IM at the mo, so if enough people reply to this post I might be able to get somewere.
Thanks for your time peeps

Check out http://www.iwoc.co.uk/myp1.html . I have lost count how many I had. I gave up in the end with the best of the bad bunch. One was atrocious! The dealer even offered to get it sprayed independantly because they had alos lost faith in what was being supplied.
Also paint has a 6 year warranty doesn't it??? And the P1 wing is supplied as standard. I would certainly stick to your guns.

Cheers guys but, I thought it was a six year anti-perferation warranty, and not a paint falling off warranty. otherwise they would be painting cars every day of the week!

The paint around the P1 emblem bubbled within 6 months of getting the car from new. It got it sorted out by my dealer, respray i think.
The problem has not returned in two and half years.
It should be covered under warranty if your yearly body work service has been done, check back of service book for stamp.
Is it IM or the dealer that is refusing to do it??

There is a definate problem with the way the rear wing is painted. IM will not admit this however, because they would loose money replacing lots of wings. I for one, am very upset about my rear wing or should I say 3rd rear wing!!! I have spent in the region of 70+ thousand pounds with subaru/IM over the years, but this is where it will stop. Especially since IM will not even help replace it, or offer anything except ''speak to my dealer'' attitude. Even though the wing I have is defective, and the dealer has the same trouble, leaving me with a problem I can't solve, unless I get heavy!
Still fuming mad arhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!!!!!

I had 2 replacements wings on mine before it was sorted.
Best bet is for the dealer to get it resprayed at IM's expense.
I had heard similar regarding the wing only being covered for 12months - but you could try (as suggested above) quoting the 6 year bodywork warranty - as it should cover all standard items on the car - shouldn't it?

we had a problem with our rear wing (albeit not P1) where IM refused to do the warranty work and the dealer paid for it instead - stick up for yourself!

I thought that Armourfend was applied to many to overcome the issue before delivery. It might be worth trying that route if you end up getting it sprayed.
Amended to add I think Armourfend was also applied to the lower front spoiler because of the same problem.

Hi Dr. evil, the only trouble with a respray is getting the old paint off. I they don't you are just putting good paint over bad.
I've had two messed up because they sandpaped the detail out of the lettering, so I'm reluctant to get the third one done. I'm very fussy about things like this, and I like things to be the way they were intended. I'm sure IM didn't intend the paint to come off either, but the fact is it does! To get a proper paint job the wing needs to be stripped, which is very difficult according to the body shop I visited on Saturday. They said they would not even attempt the job, because they knew they could'nt provide the job to A1 standard.

There was a similar problem on the Escort Cosworth's lower wing. The type of plastic used reacts with the paint causing bubbling and cracking. Apparently a special under coat has got to be used, I forget its name.

It would be very handy to know if they haven't manufactured these wings to an acceptable standard by not using the appropriate materials. maybe if most P1 owners have a paint fault in their rear wings, we could get enough pressure on IM to do something about it.
THIS SHOULD NOT HAPPEN!!! IM are you listening?

Mine's ok - there were problems with the original batch (I'm sure I heard that Subaru were fitting WRX spoliers for a while whilst they resolved and sorted out the problem). I seem to recall it was the first x hundred delivered in the first 6 months or something.
It's the front skirt I have most paint problems with .......
good luck

I have had paint problems on the roof of my P1(850)
A mechanic spotted it at the 2nd service done within 12 months. There was a very small bubbled area about 12inchs back from the screen seal. Got the warranty guy down who dismissed it as a stone chip gone bad. Well since then its got other areas going the same!
plenty of genuine stone chips none of which have bubbled elsewhere.
Upshot is that roof paint is only covered for 12 mnths but they will consider the matter at subaru Uk due the problem being 'spotted' earlier!
Will let you know how it goes.

That's intresting. My roof is going to be painted next week because of that same problem. This one however looks like a stone chip that's gone bad. Anyway I have no problem in paying for this myself since it's just ''one of those things'' type situations. But the rear wing is not ''just one of those things'' and IM should be big enough, and grown up enough to take resposibility for it.
