Question

Driving down the M40 yesterday I passed
a Subaru XT AWD Turbo (D reg).

It's a coupe and looks nothing like the current Impreza.

Does anybody know more about it?

No its not an SVX

It was related to the L series subaru's - the predesessor to the Legacy.

It was a very angular coupe with a 1.8litre 8 Valve turbo engine - permanent (I think 4 wheel drive) air suspension.

Very strange looking and got slted by all the motoring press (They had an XT6 in the states which seem quite popular)

Actually these were quite quick......

In their day (early/mid eighties) they were gorgeous and dead trendy!

Subaru (uk) sold quite few, and yes metallic pea green was a popular colour!!

Same engine as the L series Turbo Estate and RX Turbo Saloon/Coupe. The turbo kick was brutal, they had a stonking turbo size.

Most have rotted away by now probably.

Early ones were selectable four wheel drive (BIG torque steer) later cars were permanant 4wd. Auto's had air suspension that was like driving on blancmonge!!

They had a pistol grip gear lever, like a *******ised joystick affair - how cool was that!!

There's on in the film BIG with Tom Hanks in it, when he goes back small and gets dropped off back at home by his girlfreind she has one! (sad or what!!)

Aaaah those were the days..........

Top Trivia: IIRC, on the top spec L-series estate (the Turbo Auto version), whenever you put on the wipers the car would put itself in 4WD automatically!!! I do have an excuse, my parents had three L-series estates.

Dr Hu, In BIG the XT was dark brown metallic. How sad is it knowing that.

They even used to rally them, before the Legacy. I think it was either Ari Vatanen or Markku Alen, on the Safari, in some well-distant year. A quick dig around the Rallycourses tonight and I could find out for you. A bloke called Ewan Brewis used to rally an "L" turbo saloon, he started off in Low-Range 1st, then 2nd, then 3rd, then switched to high-range 3rd, etc. World's first 4WD / turbo / 10speed rallycar?

I think I just won the sad competition!
