If (and it looks ever likely) we end up going to war, do people have any thoughts on what will happen to the price for a litre of Optimax? Sure, there will be the usual hysteria with people filling up tonight (House of Commons address at 7pm by Foreign Minister), but I wonder what the effect will be in a few weeks time.

As a side note, my thoughts go out to the people and families that will be involved in this conflict.

83.9p a litre in my end. This was from 79p a litre not long ago. I'm not going to panic till it costs at least 1 quid a litre..

Just gone up from 78.9p to 81.9p in Doncaster. I expect petrol prices will rise to 87ish if war breaks out. I dont know the full impact on crude oil prices for the petrol companies, but I think prices are likely to go up in the event of war regardless of the cost to petrol companies.

Cool

Maybe I'll stock pile some octane booster and add that to std. unleaded if the price for SUL or Optimax gets too silly?

84.9p here in Kent

Remember, tho', it's the difference in price over NUL that determines whether Octane Booster is worthwhile. The difference WAS 4p, is now 5p.

What usually happens is the price of a barrel of oil goes up during a war, so the petrol prices will go up.

Then the war is over and the price for a barrel of oil comes down, with this particular war in the long term this may come down quite a bit.

However, the cost of petrol will go up

Cynical, me? I can't even spell it most times...

The Shell in Farnborough is selling Optimax at 87.9p/litre!!!!!!!

Saving grace is a small Shell in Cove (about 3miles away) that sells for approx 81.9/litre - not quite sure why there should be such a difference.

My only local source of Optimax has just upped the price from 78.9 to 82.9p/litre. Bloody George Dubbleyuh. Bet petrol in America has only gone from 22p to 23p/litre or something silly.

Besides all the death and suffering that comes with war can't they think of how its going to drive us all to diesel ownership? Nooooooo!!!!!

When we get on with it the price will drop... the longer we get halted by the assorted bleeding hearts, tree huggers and ugly old earth mothers the further it will rise...

Do none of you ever read History?

The longer we have waited, the more it has risen... it only very rarely falls right back to where it was... so you can thatnk the assorted mongrels mentioned above for rising prices...

History... it's a good read!

Question

87.9p/ltr?????!!!!!

I shudder to think what a price like that (or greater) will do for my fuel bills - I do anywhere upto 2,000 miles a month.

Can you imagine? Lines of Scoobies on the motorway inside lane doing 60mph desperately trying to keep off boost...

Petrol in California is $3.50 a US Gallon that means $4.20 for our UK gallon, thats about 50p per ltr.

Please also, will you all remember something... The US pays and has done since 1973 more for each gallon of crude than we do!

It is only our Gov'ments that have kept their fuel looking cheap... the US has acted as World policeman since 1973 and has incurred almost all the cost of this... they have paid for our cheap fuel to which our Gov'ments have added their huge take... the US has been keeping your fuel costs low for years...

History...

Considering that oil supplies are being maintained at the same levels as before the war hysteria broke out, and OPEC have committed to ensuring that the market remains stable at all times, the current price hike for petrol can only be seen as nothing short of blatant profiteering!

I buy 90% of my Optimax from the same Shell petrol station and I have seen the price rise from 73.x pence per litre in July last year to 83.9 last night!

WTF!!!

it's just gone up for the third time in four weeks here. First from 79.9 to 81.9. Then to 82.9, now it's 83.9. The old sneak it on and they wont notice routine?

Awe well, as someone famous once said, same s**t different day!

If the unfortunate happens my thoughts and wishes are with our lads and lasses in the gulf and I suppose with the ordinary Iraqi peeps who'r probably caught up in a spat of mad Saddams making.

Hoping it doesn't get out of hand - worried,

Cal

I just that they are softening the blow now and that there isn't another massive rise when it finally breaks out.

I'm afraid the oild companies will con us all the way if they can

Oh and the US arent totally the kind fuel men as they happen to contribute about a quarter of the worlds greenhouse gas quota whilst refusing to sign up to many of the cleanup accords of many a green earth meeting of the "big boss" states, so giving the crude with one hand and taking away the fresh air with another?

Not a tree hugger by the way - well only to the extent that I havent decatted yet anyway!

Oh and as an aside, my dad reckons that recently theyve discovered an oil field in Canada at least as large as the stocks in Iraq? Wonder if that'll affect the world oil prices at all in the long run?

Price will either go up,down,or stay roughly the same, that's for sure! (or all stocks will dry up and we all starve, but that is less likely)

It wouldn't surprise me as he taxes everything else when we need it least.

Its probably the petrol companies cashing in, in readyness for the price hike that will happen. make a quick buck before the hike kicks in.

Besides this we have our own oil fields just off britain but someone has decided its cheaper to import oil from other countries than mine our own!!! maybe its time we stopped importing stuff and looked at giving our economy a boost by producing stuff at home.

What about LPG? anyone running a scooby on this?

I was listening to the BBC news whilst chomping on my Shredded Wheat this morning and they were talking about a decrease in crude oil with the event of war that should see a barrel for $20 = Reduced prices at the pump. Still depends on how silly our government is on the 11/04 though.

By the way if it does revert to $20/Barrel that means (In theory) we should see the prices we had about 18 months ago 68/69p/Litre for unleaded and approx 72p/litre for SUL/Optimax.

We live in Hope !

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/business/2860417.stmTalks of crude oil prices dropping, so it can't be long before we see the savings passed on to us at the petrol station forecourts, now can it?

$3.50 a gallon on California!.. no chance..

Yep I know that California is the most expensive of the States as the State tax on fuel is very high, compared to where I am a lot of the time in the Mid West - it wasnt anywhere near this price when I was there a few weeks ago.. pretty sure it was under $2 a gallon.. 6.4 pints compared to our 8 pints.. certainly nowhere near $3.50 for Super 93 (similar to our Super Unleaded)

The US Government has (had) huge stock piles and releases then rebuilds when prices are lower. They dump it to reduce the price impact of rising oil for the US Citizens as it can mean the difference between winning the election or not

Not surprisingly their supplies have been getting lower lately...
