Not all cops are bad
#1
Driving up the M1 cruising just over 90mph, happened to look in my rear view mirror and there is a Omega cop car filling the view. I indicated into the middle lane thinking the worst, but he just drove up along side me and worded "slow down". The road ahead was clear, so I'm grateful he didn't pull me over and issue me with a fine and points.

Alot of people have been done for far less. Number plates, Exhausts, flames.
I'm only 25 (not over the hill yet) and I do look younger, but probably deserve some luck.

He was probably either:
1. Coming to the end of his shift
2. Had more important duties elsewhere
I can assure you if he'd have been at the start of his duty you would almost certainly have been got.. All Police are bad....

Well you must be grateful for that-nice that he was taking note of clear conditions and being generous. In earlier times before speed cameras and radar checking you were only likely to be caught for speeding by a following police car or bike. We all had the habit of checking the rear view mirror almost as much as the front view!

You are very, very lucky.... if a copper is doing 70-75 I never overtake.. they are inviting you to get caught.. the ones around yorkshire are the worst.. Speeding kills.. no actually its lack of concentration... and watching the situation around you at all times
I have been done for 78 mph.. yep 78 mph.. none of this 10% plus 3...
I also know a collegue who got a ticket for 73mph on the M4 Wiltshire!.. I know becuase I saw it..!!
The Police stated that if the speedo said 73 then he would have beeen doing at least as they cant understate or something like that and speeding was at the Polices Discretion.. I always though the guidelines were set in stone
Spoon.. how true

Speedos are allowed to over-read, (i.e. say that you are going faster than you actually are). I think the margin of allowable error is 10%, although I could be wrong. They are not allowed to under-read, (i.e. say you are going more slowly than you actually are), at all.
If your speedo says 73mph, the chances are that you are not doing 73mph and you are very very unlikely to be doing more than 73mph.
I recently tested my speedo against a GPS unit, so I know mine is around 5mph out. If my speedo says 85mph, I am actually doing 80mph.
The exceptions are the speedos in many, (but not all), police vehicles, which are calibrated to be exact.

you know even if they are going to stop me eventually and give me 3 points I think I'll carry on doing 80-5MPH as I feel that it's perfectly safe. I don't need anyone to tell me that a certain speed is "dangerous" or "wrong" and until they catch me and I get some points on my licence I'll carry on doing a reasonable speed for the conditions. My own self respect doesn't allow me to conform to these arbitary rules.

If it was an Omega and on a Motorway, then it's overwhelmingly likely to have been a Traffic car. And, generally, Traffic Officers have a reputation for being more 'judicious' in respect of when they warn, and when they ticket/initiate prosecution. They're all professional drivers, versed and experienced in high-speed motoring. In this instance (unless, as was cynically, but possibly correctly, asserted that they didn't have time for the hassle of a pull over), they will have noted the clear road, and they will have noted your concentration and alertness of observation -
- exactly!!
The outcome is:
a) you slowed down,
b) You'll remember the warning just as much as if they ticketed you, and
c) You've reached the conclusion that not all cops are bad - which is both true (tho' many show poor judgement, blinded by their occupation) and also beneficial to both sides.
It's called "win/win"

Would this be a dark green omega?? Reg plate beginning with a V on a 51?? They were very nice to us too - putting the blue grille lights really made me panic but fortunatley nothing happened

One night about 3 a.m. I was coming back from a wedding, my wife, 2 kids and mother-in-law had all gone to sleep in the car and I was just gently cruising down the M3 at about 85. No other traffic for miles, but some headlights in the mirror were very gradually gaining.
I though nothing of it but eventually in my mirror I saw them change lane and start to pass.
Noticing that they has started to pass but not yet actually gone past I looked across to the right. Running exactly parallel in lane 2 was a traffic car - I nearly jumped out of my skin. Looked at speedo - dead on 85. Looked at them - they looked back - then they speeded up slightly and very gradually disappeared into the distance.

At least some of you show good sense.....
Some of you are just tw@ts....
ALL COPS ARE....... that is just a juvinile statement.
the only word that makes that statement true is PEOPLE.
They are people just like you and me, well just like me, but I am glad to say they are better than many of you, they have good days and bad days, just like us, they see someone doing something wrong/illegal then they will make a "judgement" you may not agree with it, but if you look at it with hindsight then you will realise that it is the right decision, at least 99% of the time anyway.

Amazing really, If I said "All builders are cowboys" just because I had a bad experience or as stats say "All women are safer drivers" people would say I was mad. I don't like being called a tosser or whatever by someone I don't know because of the job I do...what if there were no Police?? Yeah yeah, I expect you'd think that was great until you needed us and then it'd be different. Lets hope you never need the help of us tossers!

I'd have nicked you if I was a policeman
Based on what you say, you were speeding and driving without due care and attention.
Why do I say that? Well you were doing an indicated 90 (so at least 10 mph over the limit, probably more) and you were in the outside lane and the road ahead was clear.
Nah, I'm not getting on a high horse, I've done the same myself just pointing out that he could have done you easily so you were lucky.

So......
"The road was clear ahead!" - so why were you in the outside lane?
"A Omega filling the rear view mirror!" - not that aware that you didn't spot it earlier!!!!
Only joking!!!! Sounds like you were lucky and the cops human.
Good luck to you and all of us out there. IMHO as long as you are driving sensibly and aware of the road, traffic and conditions, that sort of speed should not be punished in these sorts of cars.... but 70 in a 30 limit past a school or 95mph in a clapped out mini or fiesta perminantly stuck in the fastlane that won't pull over, then book them Danno murder one!
enough rambling, well done fella
