Just been looking at prices dealers are selling classic shaped Impreza's for
An example, 99v plate 5 door 37k on the clock £15,000
Who is actually buying them at these prices?, and I would be interested in knowing what the pervious owner got as a trade in..surely they can't be making 4k on a car when they sell it?

What you see it advertised for is just that, plenty of barmy private sales out there as well. Buyers market and its not going to improve as new models appear. Prices in cars very very rarely increase, they can stop depreciating but it takes a long time or extremely special circumstances to see any real increase from a low. Most people just don't accept it and hold out, while the price drops further.

Ahem, erm, I did!!!
I shopped around for ages last year and in December ended up paying over the odds for an MY00 (Jan 2000) on a V-plate, 31k miles which was for sale in a Subaru dealers for £14,995.
But, in my defence, it had extras (aircon, colour-coded, quick-shift, splashguards), FSSH, and they dropped the price by £800, gave me a £1000 more px than anyone else offered, serviced and MOT'd the car and threw in 2 years extended warranty.
That was in the days before I knew about Scoobynet and the REAL prices of used Imprezas!!!

Speaking with someone the other day who was quite chuffed at paying £14500 for an R/S reg with 35 on the clock.
I paid approx £17k for mine in Feb last year, but it was registered in Dec 01, and only had 80 miles on the clock.
I actually got £16750 out of the insurance company for an X reg, with 14000 on the clock in Feb 2002, that was registered Dec 2000.
If you want it, you pay if you dont look nationally.

Only gonna keep it for another year at most as i need to get some sort of money out of it to buy my next car!!

Maybe it's people find it easier to part 15k to a dealer for a used Subaru than parting 11k to a private seller for the same car then!
When I asked for a trade in for my MY99 last October the dealer I bought it from didn't even want to offer me a price for it...
Mind you they did have a forecourt full of them at 16-17k at the time
I should have been a car salesman

i think mega hit the nail on the head , dealers seem to sell the scoobs easier for alot more than a private seller would for £1000,s less

thats got to be becasue of insecurity! I did the same, sept 2000 I paid £12500 for a December 1996 Preg 4 door turbo with the old shape interior (not buckets) with leather trim. 44k miles, full service history, they did the cam belt service on it and gave me a years warranty. It was nearly top book but according to the book that was what it was worth. I wanted it (badly ) so I bought it and was happy.
NOW however Ive sold it for £6200 with 56k on it and an uprated ECU. Ive also discovered it's had the bump steer mod or something similar that I didnt know about (it always DID seem to handle well ) and Ive bought an 01 in a private sale (just got to collect and pay the man the balance).
Its still got Subaru warranty and only 13ish k miles. Not paid much more for it than I paid for my green one for I think 2 reasons:
Private sale always commands less as we already know
New shape released, values have taken a hit.
Ive effectively bought from the dealership as Ive still got 18 months warranty, and have paid less than they are selling 1999 cars for with 50k miles!
Best time to buy a bug eye I reckon, and private sales of classics seem to be ever increasing. In fact I was chasing the white WRX (fantastic car!) that someone else got and is now trying to sell on less than 2 weeks later. Good luck to him, but I dont think he'll get his money back.

The worst dealers seem to want 40% margins at the moment.
I was offered £2k BELOW trade on my Legacy the other day which are on other dealers forecourts at that figure plus £4.5k+
They must think people are really really stoooooppppppid

Many of you also have overlooked the fact that a dealer can get you finance on 15k easier than it is to save say 11k so people will always pay over the odds at dealerships for this simple fact. Most people cannot afford to pay out 11k in one go.Well i cant anyway

whey buzz you got one then m8
post some piccies when u get it.
certainly noticed the prices have fallen since i sold mine last june....so cant believe anyone is paying this sorta money for a 2nd hand classic shape.
last june a dealer gave me £13.5k for a straight buy and then came 200 miles to collect it. mine was a may 2000 w plate. 21k miles. aircon / quickshift / sebring backbox / ex-P1 gold alloys.

Lets face it .. we all know the reputation of the classic model .. we also know the (maybe biased) reputation of the buy-eye.
The Scooby is a cult model, you buy it to drive it, not to be insulated from the road etc etc etc .. ask on here and I'll bet if you were presented with a 15K mile MY99 Prodrive car for 14K or a 35K mile MY01 unmodded car for 14K most people would take the classic model.
It's no wonder dealer's can price them high ... people still want them .... that's not saying you'll get a good trade in on them though
Doofus.

You can always borrow £11k elsewhere - dealer finance is rarely competitive
They will become classic cars IMHO, and the prices dealers try it on at will reflect this. A well cared for example at a dealer will rush you a goodly amount of money, but is still a bargain for what you're getting.
I sold privately, I think Chrome is happy with the purchase

Ive got 7k from Cahoot at 7%. Less than the Halifax and I dont have to pay any fee to pay it off early - so Ive taken it over 5 years to reduce the payments and I'll pay it off in 2 max.
Im sure there are better deals, but that seemed good enough to me and I could afford it so went for it.

45k MY99 for £13 -14k or 15k MY01 for £13-14k?
Would anyone REALLY buy the classic, given that choice?? Not me! Bug eye with warranty left lease, I'll get some morettes!!
After all, what ELSE is ugly about it? The spoiler? £300 and sorted... next?

It's not the looks I was on about ... it was the driving experience
I was comparing the cars based on the same price so lets make things fair eh. By my reckoning, apart from the Sti7, the bug-eye is always going to be the hard one to sell.
Low mileage classic at a dealers isn't going to be hard to shift. Average mileage standard bug-eye is going to sit there some time methinks.
IMO anyway.
Doofus.

So I ask again, who'd buy a classic with the old interior for the same money as a bug eye?
And anyway, the bug eyes were a "limited run" (OK it was 2 years ) so in future will be more exclusive I reckon

i think many of you follow the press.
is the bug eye such a bad car.
if you have a classic you will probs say yes but for what reason?
many who slate the new wrx cant afford one.
To change the subject i was thinking how many of you would hand over 9000 cash for a private sale. it would be a brave think to do if its a stranger

wakeboarder - as you say, I would be loathe to pay a lot of money out on a private sale. I feel much more comfortable paying more money for the comfort of buying from a dealer. More importantly, I can px my existing car - the prospect of test-pilots, possible car thieves etc is not something I would entertain.
As for the classic/bugeye thing - I chose to replace my old MY99 with an RB5 because I personally dont like the bugeye. But I would say it (the bugeye) is a better car - quieter, smoother, more comfortable etc. All down to personal taste. I would be surprised if many people were prepared to pay more for an older classic than for a newer bugeye. Having said that, I could have bought a newer bugeye for quite a bit less than my RB5 WR so I have just proved myself wrong!!!
As for the example quoted in the original topic, that is a ridiculous price. I px-ed my MY99 last June. The dealer still has the car sat on his forecourt (or at least he did a couple of weeks ago). He just cant sell it. It has 48000 miles, full history/warranty, is in immaculate condition and the price is £10495. Doesnt make any sense to me.

Im going to hand over more than that in a weeks time to a chap Ive spoken to twice and never met.
Ive agreed purchase of a bugeye from a guy who advertised it on here a few weeks back. Its got full service history and 18 months warranty left. It comes out sparkling clean on the HPI check. Ive spoken to the chap who appears mature and well spoken on the telephone, not an 18 year old insisting on calling me "mate" every third word. Ive sent a deposit to secure the car. What could I possibly do that would mean I get a better car from a dealership?
It isn't their car so they cant tell me about what its been used for, ie motorways, shopping trips once a fortnight etc, even if they would! They dont know if its been kept in a garage, but if I get to the guys house and he wheels it out of one, its a good sign. Theyve got not a lot of interest in making it appear nice when I go see it, as its only one of many theyve got and they are all employees anyway. They are professional sales people out to make money out of me, not a seller with a vested interest in making sure I like the car, like them personally and therefore trust them etc and give them my money, which is invariably less than the dealership would want. And for what? A years warranty that they will wriggle out of at the lightest opportunity?
Sorry, but I personally prefer private sales for the reasons above.
Its a bit different for a classic at the moment because most if not all of them are out of manufacturers warranty by now. In a few years they will be on the same footing, but I still think the bug eye is a better car. The bug eye interior IMO is better than the classic. The ride is better from what Ive experienced. Its the next step of the development in the Scoob - engine improvements, drivetrain improvements etc etc. so I think it will always be in front.

Booked in my T plate 53K miles MY99 for a service last night and got the usual "isn't it time to change for a newer model?" spiel from the salesguy. He didn't quote for mine, but said he'd just offered £7,500 for a 1999 V plate with 53,000 miles. At that point he realised he wasn't going to get a sale...
