Okay, this could get messy

Check the HPI register (for smashes and outstanding finance) AND check for any signs of a smash. ALOT of these cars don't get repaired through insurnace companies, usually becasue the driver only has 3rd party insurance. Scratchs, new bolts, lines not lining up, scuffed alloys can all be pointers.

Check the oil, and find out how often it has been changed, and what oil it has been running.

check what fuel the owner has been using, if normal unleaded should be SUL.

FIND OUT ABOUT ALL THE MODS!!!

DEMAND to hear it start from cold and listen for piston slap. I'm not entrely sure what is sounds like though.... probably sounds like a flipping diesel. Also listen for other wierd noises. Bear in mind that they usually have an audible tapping sound, they all do it

Ummm, probably some other stuff to, like tyres, brakes etc... the usual really

Considering your location I'd say that if you are buying locally have a word with Scoobysport in Basildon and see if they'd do an inspection. Otherwise it's 'just a car' so listen for odd noises, look for crash damage, get it HPI'd (make sure it isn't nicked) and check the service history...look for frequent oil changes (at least every 6 months). You could go over to the Halfway House pub over on the A127 tonight to talk to a bunch of scoobynerds too.

From around 6.30 onwards...there is a thread in the 'Southern' section of this BBS about it. Occasionally get bored there and wander over to the Festival park in Basildon from 8.30pmish onwards.

Get it checked out. Could cost you a arm and leg. A lot of cars are not looked after.
