As a lot of you out there are 'IT' types, I though I'd see if any of you can help me.
I have recently aquired a Palmtop PC, and need to find an ISP (preferably free!) that supports the 'Windows CE' operating system.
Can any of you help?

Most of your basic ISPs offer the same services.

If you have a CE machine then the important stuff you need is

* Connect at whatever speed your CE connects at - Not a problem as most ISPs now support 56K
* Web access, preferably without a proxy in the way (not sure if CE supports this?)
* POP3 mail box - They all do (just about)
* TCP/IP, DNS, dial-up settings.

The trouble with most ISPs is that in order to get a large market share - they make it really easy to set up (ie, slap in the CD you Win95 box and away you go). However using CE means you have to do it manually, and indeed don't want to set it up on a Win95 box.

IMHO out of the ISP's I've used - I'd go for FreeNet - as you can set up a free account on their web site (and they don't assume you're setting it up on a Win95 box), and they give you all the settings you'll need to set up CE manually.

Hi Guys,

Changing the direction of the original post a little. I need to find myself a CHEAPER ISP. If I can shed some £'s from the phone bill, the car can get some more goodies ... which she most certainly deserves!

Any advice from all you IT wizzards on here would be most appreciated.

BT Click / MSN is Free and I use it.

I also have the BT Higwhay ( ISDN , it's Not cheap ) and I put the numbers on friends and family.

Other than just using BBS at work there is no other way I can save money.

Loads of ISP's are offering free services these days.

Now i,m no computer wizkid...but i use IC24 . The connection speeds are amazing , i always get over 47000bps and on Sundays it dials into an 0800 number . Wow i hear you cry, I just leave the computer on all day , and i does not cost a penny. Added to that i,v got an All Advantage web bar at the bottom of the screen....and when i logged on .....They Pay Me.

The company I work for has its own ISP. If anyone is interested mail me and I can send you a free CD (limited number) and you can have a look and if you don't like it use the cd as a coaster.

BT have just launched a new service. Gives free phone calls weekdays 6pm to midnight and free all weekend. Costs £10 a month one off charge. It will save me a mint.

only came online today, im on it allready.

Is this new BT service any good? I'm concerned that it might be unusably slow. (I'm fairly impatient!). Most of the "cheap deals" I've tried have pretty bad performance compared to pay ISPs. However it would save me a small fortune.

I wish Altavista all the best for this one. More peeps online is good news for me, but I shudder to think what it is gonna be like trying to connect to the service when 99% of the IT types fit a second phone line and hook up 24 hours per day for a "free" 56k leased line...

Prepare for it to be time restricted (i.e. max amount of continuous connection before you are kicked off) or members restricted (e.g. first 500,000 people only) or filled with adverts, or all of the above.

The only problem at the mo with BT Internet Free is the fact it doesn't support 128k! I'm using it right now, and it's brill. Nice fast reliable connection. Thoroughly recommend it.

BT internet actually kicks you off after 2 hours continuous use. They use some bull**** reason about keeping the availability high. You just have to reconnect again. bear it in mind if you are doing a big download.

Good point from JohnF - use something like Go!Zilla which can cope with downloads being stopped and re-started half way through.
