I have been running in my new STI 8 for the last 2 weeks, and on the odd occasion I let the car go up to beyond 90mph, I get a loud humming from the intercooler intake.
I tried engaging the clutch at this speed, allowing the engin to idle, and the humming continued until my speed dropped to below 90.
Is anyone else with the new car getting the same?

Slow down
Seriously though - the best thing is to get somebody else in the car to locate the noise. The driver is in a fixed position and therefore can stuggle to accuratly locate a noise.
If it is the air intake look for anything loose (on top of bonnet , underside of bonnet , engine bay etc ) as something could have been missed on assembly, and may only vibrate with the wind at a set speed.

No obvious loose bits in the intake..
The rubber seal seems a bit loose, but I do not know what it should look like.
Tyres are new, and the humming changes with a head wind, so I think I can rule them out.

Could be the wing mirrors, push them in and make sure the little sticky back label has been removed,( wind makes it vibrate and make strange whistle like noise )
Or it could be the door glass not sitting tight against the window rubber ( thats what it was on my bug eye )
If so the dealer needs to adjust the glass for you.

Despite what I was starting to believe about the noise being the other half i stopped mine. Alhtough mine is on a 94 WRX. Turns out that my problem was a leaf stuck in the ventilation system, had it once on my golf a few years back.
Worth a try although considering your car is pretty new I dont think it will be. But mine did come at 90mph ish.
Pretty pointless but worth a look.

Thankyou everyone for your advice... I will check the mirrors, door glass, splitter, tyres, leaves in the intake, etc, tonight!
The humming does dimminish gradually, as I decrease in speed, so I am 99% sure the problem is wind related.
The 1000 mile service is on Thurs, so the dealer is in for a hairy run!!
Cheers

Could be the diff/gearing
Mine Hums 'very' noticeably at around 50/60/70 and gets louder the faster I go
My cars got very little sound proofing so it's probably a lot more noticeable at lower speeds
I wouldn't worry about it

Mine does this as well, STi 7. It's certainly worse in certain wind directions or conditions. I had the feeling it was related to the aluminium bonnet or air scoop and certainly think it is coming from body panels. A friend sitting in the back thought it may even be from the boot spoiler but it does not sound like this from the drivers seat. I still would not write off this as a possibility though. I am certain it is not diff or drivetrain noise on mine. It is scary when it happens as it sounds like something is about to take off ... LOL. Maybe Damien from Prodrive has experience this.....on their test track of course

300 miles into the STi8 and have done 100mph at 4K revs, no humming from the bonnet area though mate. Sounds like an air flow issue across something loose.
Demand the dealer looks at it or go to another dealer as the cars are covered across all dealerships.

I've had this from new for 15000 miles on an 02 WRX. It starts humming/droning from 110mph constantly through to max always. It is sometimes lower if very windy, therefore i think it is airflow related. Dealer doesn't know and won't check. They say - warranty is not valid over 70mph (not pushed the issue yet).
The guy who says it relates to "tightening" the window against the rubber seal - how do i do this ?
Any constructive replies appreciated.

I sometimes get a little extra windnoise from the drivers door seal on MY02 WRX. I solve it by opening the window a crack and reclosing it, then it goes away, which seals things properly.
I've never gone over 60 without fixing it as the wind noise if it isn't sealed properly annoys me after that, but might be worth a try?

ScoobyL, the reason i said it may be the Rad fan :
I have a sport , not turbo, and sounds like the same thing happened to me. I also think wind related. Only happened the once at 85 ish. And was driving into a stiff breeze. Eased off slightly and it disappeared, sped up and reappeared. Its the only time its happened.
Puts the sh%ts up you though .
