Question

Do these prices sound about right for private cars in pristine condition and v.low miles?

1998 V4 Type R £17/18K

1999 V5 Type R £20/21K

Any Comments?

I sold my 98R V4 a few weeks back for £16850 with 25000 miles on the clock. It was in pristine condition so I guess your 17K to 18K is a bit high. I could have got more because once I had sold mine I continued to get calls but I reckon between £16750 and £17000 is about right. Maybe add a bit for extras. Dealers seem to be charging between 18K and 19K which is OTT.

Don't buy a V5, you will struggle to sell it.

THERE IS NO POINT BUYING FROM A DEALER. The cars are cheaper privately and they have a Subaru warranty and you can see who you are dealing with.

Good luck.

Red face

Kevin,

what do you mean by: "...cars are cheaper privately and they have a Subaru warranty and you can see who you are dealing with."

Do private STis have Subaru warranties? Do ANY STis have Subaru warranties?

And can't you see who you're dealing with when you buy a car from a dealer? If so, I quote, "How long have I been away?" (picture: volvo advert)

Rich.

It also depends on the area of the country you live in daz. Here in Sussex both those cars would be a few k more.

I looked at a ltd edition yellow type r that was 97p and it was up at 21995 on the forecourt !

similar prices all round here.

richards,
2 Points you made.

1. All UK cars (I would not even think of buying an import) have a three year warranty which is transferrable to the new owner so no matter where you buy your car you will get that warranty. So there is no 'safety' in buying from a dealer.

2. If you buy privately you can go and see who owns the car and where he keeps and generally what sort of person he is. Quickly you can make a opinion if you would want to buy from this person. If you buy from a dealer you have no idea where the car has come from or who has driven it. It may have come from an auction for all you know. You are in a much worse situation.

Of course you must HPI any car bought privately and get the person to sign an afidavit that he has not had a smash.

Unhappy

KevinS,

I'm confused?! You said you wouldn't think of buying an import but also said that you've just sold your V4?

Am I missing something here?

Cheers,

Justin.

Kevin,

Sorry, I completely misunderstood. But yes, I see your points...

But then, like Justin I'm confused - sounds like you had a Version 4 STi or WRX???

Please, this riddle is just too difficult for Tuesday afternoon.

Rich
