A search on "knock" or "knock link" should turn up a few dozen threads.

would that be an indicator to the driver (knock link or similar) or a sensor that is used by the ECU (Subaru OEM knock sensor)?

Knocking is the self detonation of the unburnt fuel in the combustion chamber toward the end of combustion, causing huge pressures that can damage the engine. The Knock sensor monitors engine noise, detects detonation, and optimizes advance to help prevent knock-related engine damage.
