http://atsearch.autotrader.co.uk/dealer_search.asp?abname=andersonca1&pageid=1

Look down the list to see a 1999 RB5 going for £5,995
thought it was a mistake on autotrader, but the garages site has the same price on it too ? whats going on ?

Is there not a sales act that allows a buyer to buy the vehicle at the advertised price?

No, by law anyone offering something for sale is doing just that. Called Invitation to treat. They are simply asking punters to make an offer either at or above the price indicated. The seller does NOT have to accept at all.

Not sure thats a 100% unless it varies between company policies. I bought a Deep Fat Fryer from Tesco which was on the shelf for £49.99. When it went through the till it came up as £79.99. Cos the shelf label said £49.99 I got it at that price even though it was defintely wrong (I checked on tesco.net later on).

Admittedly not the same as £15k car bu never the less.

Simon.

That's "goodwill" from Tescos then.

As DW says, the display price is just an ITT and they can refuse to sell it for that price.

However, a shop is not allowed to make misleading price indications.

Chris is right - Tesco will be in a better position to just lose £30 or so, rather than risk them being in the local newspaper.

If you had done that at a small independant trader, I'm fairly sure it would be different.

How do I know all this? Did a law module during my degree, specialising in contract law, sale of goods etc. This particular bit always sticks in my mind as I was amazed. Still surprised at how many people think otherwise

I did a Business Law module whilst at College. Fascinating subject and we only scratched the surface.

Go in at the weekend, hope to speak to a salesman who knows nothing about the car (there are plenty ), show the adverts and explain how the 1 on the screen must be an error, and walk away with a bargain

tesco could refuse to sell at 49.99 but would have to take all the other fat fryers off the shelf for the day.

DW is bang on. there is a surprising amount of really dull case law relating to this, but he has hit the nail on the head, eve using the correct terminology.

For an agreement or contract to binding you need consideration (ie product) offer and acceptance.

The advertised price is not an offer as stated, therefore there is no contract. The only thing hat doesnt fall under this law is property or intellectual property.
