OK,
I will be getting a WRX wagon and have been told that it will run fine on Prem unleaded. I know that STi's must be run on SUL, else pistons may melt, but do standard WRX's need SUL or is running on PUL (premium unleaded) all the time OK?

 

Personally I would suggest SUL. One view is that as STi's have stronger internals that WRX's, but similar power, it's even more vital to ensure the best fuel possible in a WRX. Personally I don't consider it to be worth trying to save a few quid a week putting in a lower grade of petrol. I also feel my WRX runs far better on Shell SUL.

Chances are you'll get different views from different people, but in the end it's up to you and the risk you're willing to take. You pay your money etc...

Run my WRX wagon on NUL as it's supposed to be OK and the STi on SUL. The NUL has caused no problems I know about in the past 15 months of ownership. Wouldn't risk the STi on it though

Had my 95 WRX for 5 months first two months ran on 95 premium. Then got worried with the ongoing talk of blown engines .So since been using super UL no doubt in my mind, scooby is much smooooooother!! on SUL . Have always used Shell is it better petrol ??.

 

Get a Knock Link - under £100 fitted and then you can feel much more comfident with your choice of fuel.

Cheers guys. Think I'll run on PUL for a month and then switch to SUL and see what the diff is.

I agree with Paul - it also goes to show that this is not just a MY99 problem either, it relates to all Japanese cars, expecially tuned ones.

PS There was a UK car running at Santa Pod that was detting as well - don't know the state of tune, but it was definately a UK car (weather was very cold tho' so boost would be high!).

don't use 95 RON - period.

just been listening to an sti v4 that was run on 95 RON supermarket petrol - until tuesday night that is... catastrophic failure of piston - will probably require new block ! - this is not a scare-story but fact.

besides, everyone that I have spoken to who owns a wrx has said that they run very poorly on 95 RON anyway - much smoother on Super.

NB - Knocklink will not 'protect' in any way - it is merely a sensor with LEDS to show knock occurring - however this may help you to 'tell the difference' between 95 and 97 RON fuel !
