The story . You buy a scooby, take it to your local Scabbyru dealer ,pay ridiculous labour charges and do everything humanly possible to treat ya pride n joy right. Then it comes to light ,that Subaru have made a batch of motors which are gonna need considerable work done on em RE. PISTON SLAP.. then the car goes out of warranty and piston slap sets in and despite 40k fully serviced by Scabbyru "tough luck mate now get lost " !!! Admirable lack of customer care .Subaru UK say "write in and beg and we can all have good ole larf at the office then f*ck ya off"
Considering this is a manufacturing fault their attitude is appalling. So remember (no matter how well ya cars been serviced n looked after) Scabbyru will wash their hands of it should it develope this prob ..

I doubt the extended warranty would cover a design fault.

Sorry to here the news mate but that seems to be the deal with Subaru these days. Can anyone remember when we used to vote them the best in the JD power survey? they wont get that award any more will they!

Roy.

P.S. as far as manufacturing faults go they have kept a big hush hush about all the engines that let go with big end bearings failure aswell, mmmmmmmmm

I purchased my car about 8 weeks ago, and as soon as it went in for its 36 month service, the dealer informed me a bout the piston slap. I think the car was 5 months out of warrenty. They replaced the piston covering 100% of the cost.

They actually put the wrong sized piston and ring in, and 2 weeks later it was as a specialist engine builder being sorted, but Subaru still stumpted up 100% of the cost.

I have no complaints

MY98s were "apparently" worst culprits.

Note that it's not just classic shapes. There's been at least one posting on here about piston slap on an MY01+...

Talking

I had my slapper repaired UK97 last year.

First of all they said 'sorry sir it's out of warranty'

I then said 'yes but it's a manufacturing fault and therefore warranties don't come into it'

Within half an hour i got a call back from subaru UK, who told me to take the car to my local dealer. 3 days later all repaired at no cost to me

I'd personally get in touch with the customer relations guy "John Sherwood" at Subaru Uk, and direct your frustrations in his direction, as they may well offer a goodwill gesture towards the repair

I've got a MY98 so probably have piston slap. I've owned the car for about 8 weeks as well and all this talk of piston slap and MY98 is beginning to worry me.

Should we club together and approach Subaru UK.

Whats your thoughts, advice really appreciated on this situation!

Thanks

Dan

A guy has emailed me saying his warranty company wont stump up cos it has to "fail" i.e knacker up completely .I just wonder if that happened what the resulting bill would be and what the claim limit is on his warranty .I am writing to Subaru UK (probably be as much use writing to SCOOBY DOO methinks) and asking them to rectify the situation ..will keep you guys posted
and the dealer who has serviced this car from new (never missed a one) and then so sportingly said , "sorry" and gave me subaru uk phone number was K T Greene in Otley and the model is Terzo 98.Mind you i guess most dealer response would be the same . I think Subaru should bite the bullet and repair cars that have been fully serviced and not rallied (unless this is so widespread they cant afford it) .... laugh and the world laughs with ya, SH*T yourself and your on ya own... )

Thumbs up

John Sherwood was the person i spoke to. I don't bother dealing with the 'call centre' type people for stuff like this.

It pays to go to the top really

Iain,

Did he admit it was a manufacturer fault?

I spoke to the my local Subaru dealer Chaple Gate (car supplied by them and full serviced by them) and they said that piston slap is not a manufacturer fault as it doesn't happen to every car, he said they can put in "good will warranty claim" but he doesn't think Subaru UK will do anything about it.

Thanks

Dan

Why dont you write to autoexpress and see if they can pull some strings for you?
Worth a try I think.

Im having the same problem with Subaru uk! Bought the car 3 weeks ago found it has pretty bad piston slap dealer managed to get 50% of the repair cost out of Subaru uk but that still leaves me with £1500- £2000 to pay! The car has 40000 miles on it with every service done on time or early! Dealer has been very unhelpfull considering i have owned the car for only 3 weeks! Called Subaru uk today but they are all out at a show launching the new Isuzu!!

Crap company

Very pissed off!

I had a gearbox replaced just outside warranty and was told to takea walk by the warranty company in Holland who only wished to cover the cost of the bearings as a goodwill gesture. 2 strongly worded letters to Subaru in Japan quoting the word "honour" many times resulted in a full refund albeit 15 months after the job was done. That was the last resort and it worked!

Ive also got a 98 with what i think is early signes of piston slap, its got full Subaru service history and is just comming up to 40k.
Ive not lost any sleep over it yet but it does worry me sometimes ...only does it when the engine is cold for the first few seconds and only then sometimes
