I have been offered a Subaru Legacy Turbo, green, 94 L reg, 96k, no history to speak of but owned for a year by a mechanic mate of mine, for £2k.

Haven't had a good look around it yet, and if I find it's a good deal will HPI etc - but on the face of it, is this a good deal? I looked at Parkers and it seems a very good deal.

Sounds ok
I bought my last car with lost S/H and regretted it

Estates are worth more than saloons.

depends on how much you can trust your mechanic friend, he would of noticed if there was something wrong with it over the year

If it's any help, I have had two Legacy turbo estates, both UK models and was delighted with both. I sold them with 90+k on the clock but neither had any problems, engines still sound and pulling well, body work ok and both used as every day cars

Cheers
it's an estate - so could be a bargain - he said bodywork could do with a bit of work, but if he did that it'd go for £2500.

Thanks for link - i'll have a good look at it and decide then.

He told me the car is recorded on HPI as stolen/recovered - hence the cheapness. It has had 2 new doors, he still has old doors, and ignition. He's had it a year - and apparently no probs - runs OK, bodywork just needs a bit of touching up in places - one bit of rust on boot.
I reckon without the stolen/rec history it could be worth £2500-£3000 - do people think £2k is still a bargain?
Oh and it is fully loaded with aircon, e/h mirrors etc, last of the old shape apparently.

You pays your money and takes your choice

If cash is not ultra-tight, I'd shop around until I found a FSH car for under £3k with sensible mileage

Cool

I love mine to bits. £2000 sounds pretty good to me, just check it is all legal. Only thing to watch is: ask your mechanic friend how he did his oil change. If he didn't fill the oil filter before he fitted it, there can be some resultant long term damage. Or so I understand, anyway. There are people far better qualified than me to talk to you about this.
