I think its because the earlier close-ratio boxes were even shorter ratio than the later models. My version 2 Type RA was deffinately lower geared than my version 4 Type R for example. I seem to remember reading this somewhere too.

LOL Dave I didnt know it was that high. I have been upto and around the redline 7,500 ocassionally normally in second and third as it just goes crazy at 4K on full throttle, feels like about 0.5 of a second to get to the redline. Never been anywhere 8K though . Sounds like the WRX RA have the normal WRX clocks but the STI limiter ? Another strange one to add to the MY00 RA V-LTD collection of strange spec items .

I have just brought a MY95 STI RA and I am very impressed with the performance, sold a supercharged 111s Elise and I've got no regret's!!!
The only thing that has come to light is the very short final drive, at 5000rpm I'm doing about88mph on the speedo. Is this correct for the RA as I know it had tighter gear ratio's.

The answer is yes that is normal. Worthwhile sacrifice for the loony acceleration in my opinion.

 

Its not a motorway machine as I've found out on mine. But it still pull in fifth do so no complaints from me.

it's a bit mental on the motorway as the throttle is VERY responsive :-) at those revs ( bump, oops I'm doing 100mph !! )

The acceleration can only be described as manic, also it has a full decat. scoobysport system which pops and bangs like an old group 'B' 6R4!!

Has anyone got a similar spec. car as I would like a rough idea of the power.

Interesting, my STI 3 RA (96P) will show 100mph @ 5000rpm. Why is mine different, I though all RA's were the same

nope, the earlier ones were lower geared.

mine is an STi5 RA, does 19.8MPH/1000rpm in 5th. (revs to 8200rpm It's a great motorway car IMHO

I also have 17" P1 alloy's with 215/40 - 17 tyres, would this give me a high final drive?

It is not a problem as it is my second car and I've got some nice twisty A roads on my non - motorway route to work!!

Yep AFAIK same box as my MY00 WRX RA except my redline is 7,500 as its a WRX which is very difficult to stop it getting near in the low gears. Never hit the limiter though so I guess that must be around 7,700 rpm.

I wouldnt want to drive it everyday on a motorway for any distance and after an hour I need a break . Stupidly quick though and moidrange is unreal for standard motor, you kind of get use to it but find you are not using anywhere near full throttle at any time.

RRH then whats there to stop me if I ever say went to 9000 rpm by "accident"? I haven't tested your theory out yet on my MY95 RA as I'm too paranoid. Especially since Andy F found out that the fifth injector is actually a dud and does not work when he tested it.

 

you think thats bad, imagine the faces on the guys who bought RS500's and discovered 4 of the 8 injectors dont work.

The STi5 TypeRA does have a limiter, its at 8250rpm, red line on the clock is actually 7900rpm, contrary to internet rumour.

nothing stopping you at all mate if there isn't one, only the engine bays ability to contain the engine components

i'll stick with my illusion that there isn't one ~ it keeps me well away from anything over about 7500 ~ and most of the fun is over by then anyway so doesn't seem like a lot of point in stressing it further.

Make a car without a limiter....now thats an idea!!! My RA's limiter is 8250rpm which I believe is the STI limit. I guess the next obvious question is the diff. lock, I will do a search but if anyone wants to pass on some info. then feel free.

I think you're correct about the clocks and rev limiter Chrisp (at least on the Ver6 model anyway) - it's something i've suspected for a while.
I actually found the limiter on a blast on the continent last year.
Both my mates (XK8 and Z3 M) hit their limiters (electronic?) at 155mph simutaneously and we just sailed on past!
