Question

Hi
My clutch was replaced last Feb ish. So it is 8-9 months old.
It is begining to slip. Not all the time and usually only at lower speeds. 1-2-3. I do drive the car quite hard sometimes, so perhaps it is wearing!! Do clutches go this quickly with hard road use?

I have heard that a full bore standing start would help clean it. Is this true? Has anyone done this and has it worked? Could it be anything else?

Assume I dial in about 4k revs and let my foot of the clutch and get it into second gear pretty sharpish.

Any comments suggestions please.

Thanks
Steve

I would imagine a full bore standing start will only make it worse and could lead to failure. I am afraid it sounds like its worn .....Blutes

Not likely mate. Will only make it worse - I would suggest with
the fact it was replaced recently that it just needs adjustment.

Cool

A full bore standing start would lead to replacement at that point more than likely

Gotta go get it changed - and yes, with hard use they will wear out that quickly

Thumbs down

The full bore start was suppose to cure clutch judder (for a while and certainly not a permanent cure) just to clean up the clutch plates. If the clutch is slipping then a full bore start will just make it slip more IMHO as you are burning more material off. My 98 UK juddered from new when the mornings were cold and damp after a couple of pull offs it was okay. The only real cure is an uprated clutch IMHO. Subaru UK use to swap juddery clutches under warranty and in fact think they later fitted the one fitted to the P1 (but I may be wrong).

I'd say it would do one of two things, either slip even more or totally fry itself into teeney tiny pieces

I was a mechanic and I've never heard of anyone "cleaning" a clutch.

As for how long a clutch should last... it's impossible to say, I've seen them go after 2000 miles but then mines been ok for the 60,000 miles I've had the car! 8 - 9 months does seem a short time for a clutch which hasn't been abused

Thanks for the advice everyone.
I will see if it needs ajusting.
If I need to replace it soon - am I to assume that an AP racing one would last longer? Anyone got an upgraded clutch running in their car
Best wishes
Steve

Full bore standing start is suposed to help clutch judder.

Could be the following
Faulty clutch - not very old
auto adjuster not working/sticking
Comtaminated clutch, leaking oil seal or such like gone allowing oil onto the clutch
just plain worn out

Clutches are very much like tyres and brakes. Abuse them and they won't last. Paul made a good point about oil/fluid on the plates though. Get it checked out at an approved Subaru dealer. ....Blutes
