Anyone know what to look out for on a 92 legacy turbo?
Or know a link to a buyers guide?
Also what are the vital statistics of this model?
Cheers

Why does the clutch differ?
I thought they were now all the same (even having the p1 cover plate to sort clutch judder?)
Gearbox is the same yes?
Block is the same, EJ20 Closed Deck... Different heads... so how is clutch different???

few things you should check, mines the same year and mileage as the one your looking at:
1. rear shocks had gone (didn't realise till i brought it )
2. rust around sunroof and edge of wings
3. check cambelt & clutch (last fitment)
4. syncros in gearbox
5. can't think of anything else at the moment

magnet, check my reply to your post in General Technical.
soobmeister, the clutch is exactly the same piece of flaky chocolate as is found in Imprezas, the trick is to buy one of Mark Aigins uprated ones, the difference is astonishing.
A cheap way of improving the suspension, which lets face it is getting tired on most of them now, is to aquire a set of almost new std Impreza struts from your local dealer when they are fitting Prodrive kits

Leaks: Rear lights CAN go (though apparently this is more common on the Imprezas than the legacy saloons) Sunroof leaks (mine does) but only a little in absoloutely torrential rain.
Rattles: Heat sheild rattle seems very common. Not expensive but mildly annoying in the summer when the windows are down.
Brakes: The caliper seals can go on the front brakes. I only know of two other people this has happened to, and they (and I) have MY94 cars. Can't hurt to check though: Pretty much means new calipers (so time to put some nice big discs, calipers and wheels on then )
Look, of course, for blue smoke. If you see blue smoke coming out of the exhaust then the turbo is probably shot. In a scooby, this is probably a good indicator of a bad life.
Electrics: Dealer tells me the front foglights can be a little temperamental. Mine aren't. They have never worked!
Lumpy idle and hesitancy of acceleration can be caused by spark-plugs, poor earthing or new coil packs. All easy fixes.
The electric-up-and-down aerials are cr@p. I am on my 3rd in two years now. They are only £30 fitted from a scooby dealership because "we do so flippin many".
GearBox: You must be 100% happy with the gearbox. This is pretty much the most expensive part of the car in my experience: A rebuild will be labour intensive, and a re-con unit about the same.
AirCon: check the aircon. Most people seem to let it go to pot when they sell their car: it usually needs a re-charge (in most used cars, from my experience).
Engine bay: All the legacy's I have seen have rusty looking patches on their power steering pipework, and on the radiator mounts, and someo of the coolant pipes nearer the front. I think Subaru actually manufacture the car this way?
I think that's everything I wish I had been told when I bought mine?
Oh...and whatever you do: If you modify it get it chipped cheaply.
See www.scoobyecu.co.uk for details.

WOW!
Mine needs tuning....(shakes piggy bank)
Kev, I have to admit I prefer the look of your dads...silver really suits those wheels too!
I have a white one and it looks like a flippin rover from the back!
These things truly are the ultimate stealth car, though. I love mine to bits. And you get a lot less police attention in them too. (from experience!)
Kev...what exhaust is that you have on yours? Does it give you a significant power increase?
Cheers
Steve
Edited to add:- "ARRRGH! Corner! HOLD TIGHT!"

I always thought (and so did everyone else) that my white Turbo
looked like a Montego form the back. He He He Mr-pushy-BMW !

Grey Mica looks awesome in the sun Silver's too common
Got the exhaust from a company in Devon called Double S - Downpipe back, 3" straight through, impreza fitment but made to fit by getting an extra piece of pipe to lengthen it got a Revolution DP which is also 3" to finish it off, doesn't sound stealthy anymore

Turbo Steve, two tips for you:
you can stop the sunroof leaking in a downpour by parking nose downhill on an slight incline the rear drains just aren't up to the job.
Next time you electric aerial fails get one from a 93 on Isuzu trooper, the fitting on the wing is the same, but the motor is stronger & the seals are better
Never had any problems with my electrics but, yes I have got the factory fitted rusty power steering pipes and rattly turbo splash guard

Maybe I'm luck, either way, I feel alot better for having spend as much as I did on my estate in May, which was £3850, to which I added an alarm to the basic cost.
I've had no problems at all. The only consumable I've done is the brakes and tyres, which were well worn when i got it.
Listen for noisey tappets, not the end of the world, but they sure are annoying. Watch out for cars that have "just been serviced" like mine was, I think just to hide the noisey tappets with fresh oil.
Check everything in cabin works. Air-con was an optional extra, and adds to the value of the car, bear this in mind when you buy, I wouldn't be without mine in the summer.
Look out for rusting exhaust parts, but less of an issue if you intend to replace it anyway.
1st and 2nd synchros can wear, listen for slight crunch as the gearlever frees up to go into second.
Clutch can be a problem, plenty get done on warranty, impreza one will fit, just needs the flywheel skimming, which should be done anyway really.
Engine bay is probably covered in green gunk, to keep it from corroding, which is great, except they seem to get it all over the plastic parts and not the metal ones!
Listen for wind noise coming from the A-pillars arouns where hte wing mirror is, look for evidence of repair, such as sealent, extra-bits or whatever. One of those things that can annoy, but not enough to make you fix it straight away.
Watch out for worn shocks, if you test drive, try to get on undulating roads, and see if there is any bouncing. It won't be evident on sharp bumps.
Rust on the bottom of the bootlid.
Paint chips on the bonnet seem common too.
All I can think of for now.

This was my old Legacy
Cracking car which i repalced with my Impreza. Must say the Legcacy is far better value than the Impreza. I liked it so much I did attempt to buy it back from the dealer as I PX/d is but it had been sold on.
A few problems I noticed were .
Leaky sunroof. Also if you take up the boot carpet you can stick your hands into the voids either side of the boot and down into the seciotns behind the rear wheels. When the sunroof was leaking ,water used to pool in here !
Hesitancy. I used to get some hesitancy but this was traced to a bad connector under the washer bottle with the washer bottle weeping enough to cause a bad connection. Also the issue with the plugs that someone else mentioned. Once these two were sorted it was fine.
The engines seem to get tappety on these cars at higher mileage.
I have mine for 3 years and apart from the sunroof and some paintwork to sort out some stone chips it needed no out of the ordinary work . Just servicing and repalcing a clutch that blew up after 97000 miles which is good going.
Highly recommend one and definitley the best value for money car I have ever owned and would not hesitate to go back if I ever had to sell the Impreza.
