The Most Powerful Bugeye ???
#1
Over the last couple of months i have been modifying my MY02 WRX to date its had a PPP(now sold ecu in favour of tek2) full exhaust apart from up-pipe( soon to be done by P.E) ITG filter.
Its now producing 262 BHP and 265 lb of torque at 1 bar of boost, once up-pipe has been changed boost will put up to 1.2 bar but Mervyn didnt want it to run anymore until then because of risk of cat melting or worse breaking up and writting off the turbo.
Next mod after that is going to be high capacity top mount intercooler as i seek to achieve my goal of 300BHP.
It occured to me what sods these bugeyes are to mod and was wondering what other people have achieved with there bugeye WRX.
Who's got the most powerful bugeye WRX and how did you achieve it.
No STI7's just standard WRX's and no i think its got !!!! figures.
Proven figures only.

The TEK2 cost £625 +vat, the car runs fine, although the restrictor that was fitted when the ppp was carried out had to be drilled out because it hit the overboost cut out thats been left in place until the up-pipe has been changed.
Power delivery is now improved and its holding boost up to 6000 rpm.

You know that !
When we left last night i had a little fun with Hol so i really need this power without having to worry about reliability.
How's your up-pipe and headers ?

Up-pipe and headers just fine, ECU is still learning them, but definitely a good thing. Unfortunately spent 8 hours today on motorways in a focus so not had the chance to enjoy them much I feel a phonecall to Merv coming in the near future for my car too.
Hol will have a weight advantage - well his car will, although he won't - so I reckon you really need 400bhp to show him who's the boss!
"Easy street" in the states claim to have had ~740bhp Quarter mile in 10.5 @ 140mph (Found a quick time movie of it running 10.7 @ 135). Gives you something to aim for!

The "Easy Street" car is VERY quick, but it's not using a a WRX engine, but a bored/stroked engine built for them in Aus', by Tony Rigoli, and then shipped over.
I think you'll also find that it's built around an early 2.lt closed deck block.

Medway1,
Where abouts r u in Kent.
I have known Hols since school days, as am interested in what you have done to car.
Have STI7 aswell and are looking for performance increases, but not willing to wait for the over priced PPP.

Would it be possible to have a sit in your car sometime? I want power improvement but am not paying for PPP + the motech system is way too expensive.
Would be very interested in the Tek 2 though.

Medway Lives just around the corner from me.
The TEK2 seems to be working well on his car as he was keeping up with me pretty well through the gears when I put my foot down on the straight to 100mph and I have over 300 Brake. I just wish he'd waited until the oil had warmed up and warned me to put Optimax and Octane Booster in the tank before I went out
His is a WRX, dont forget, not an STI7 so you might even see greater gains in yours..

My car was found to produce 329PS last time on the RR.
Problem was that it was holding TOO much boost, 1.4+ bar at 7k!! That was immediately after I replaced the stock turbo with a VF29 one and I didn't "work" too much with the Link parameters.
The Link was tuned again since then and now the car holds only 1.25 bar till the redline. Car feels fast but unfortunately nothing like before. I believe it is safer this way.
Keep in mind that I run the stock internals.
Strange thing is that while I was running higher boost levels- 1.5 bar- through the revs, no det occured.
Other mods apart the Link and the VF29 are:
S/S uppipe and d/p
Hiper exhaust
HKS SSBOV
APS HFA
Samco I/C hoses
NGK PFR7 spark plugs
Link WS controller
Cheers

That must mean that the Link ecu takes away the closed loop overboost protection, I think you are lucky to get away with that stint at 1.5 bar, could have been very costly.
Still brilliant figures, well done.

Yeah thats right the M3EVO i know will just about cane any scoob out there !
The only problem is the car is suffering from an image problem now and most are looking a bit tatty, you can put nicer wheels a better exhaust and even aftermarket traction control but they are still a bit old hat these days !
Also when adding nitro's its a very good idea to get it set up properly or you might be left with a very expensive rebuild, dont you agree DC !!!

The link has closed loop boost control, it just needs the correct parameters setting, just like the std ecu, which has a map tailored to the standard car, and is different for an Sti and so on.
300hp on the std turbo is pretty hard to get, Stephen Dones car might have done it with the std turbo, but with the exhuast manifold and just about every other mod. He now runs a modified turbo, but suspect he still got near 300 with the TD04.

HA HA, thought you may appreciate that Rich!!!
You are right in what you say, but these cars are all about performance are they not? You must agree that its not about looks and image as you do own a bugeye!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! DC

My Sti is doing 324bhp and 313lb torque as from last friday.
Sti7 PPP, Unichip + Boost Controller + JR Filter + APS BOV + centre CAT removed (straight through)
Looking into next changing the exhasut manifold to a HKS one and then I will be finished.
Cheers

*pssst* Viper:
Nice figures from your car BTW!
Anyway I would have thought that the performance figures from "standard WRX's" would have been quite similar!

Phil, why get a Unichip and boost controller if you have PPP
I thought the whole reason why people went PPP was to keep the warranty and get reliable power increases?
Not having a go, just curious

No probs mate. Better power delivery, holds the boost better just wanted it fine tuned really. The Unichip still uses the PPP ecu and then allows the operator to tweak the settings that he wants to( as I understand it).
The chap that fitted it had done one before for me before and said that he would do it and if I wasn't happy, no charge and he would refund the petrol money. Was happy and paid.
Took the car when finished for a decent test run and it was improved significantly. Same margin as going standard sti7 to sti7 PPP: maybe not in power etc but just in complete driveability.
The other reason is that the car is now returning 250-300 miles on a tank of Optimax and this used to be 225-250miles.......there was alot of overfuelling etc.
I hope that this explains....
Cheers

The most powerful i ve seen over here is an STi 7 euro spec with HKS manifold, GGR exhaust, GGR induction, VF22 and M800 MoTeC. It was dynoed at 361 bhp and 52 kg m (!!) torque at 1.2 bar. Some crazy MoTeC finnish guy tuned it with amazingly very small lag due to the variable cam tuning. Its almost too torquey. Trouble is the injector duty was at 85% near the redline at 1 bar so they are after new ones.

I suspect that my WRX01 is pretty close to 300bhp now.
When we first loaded a new map on it gave 270bhp and every EcuTek car produces at least 20bhp more after the ecu has re-learnt its settings.
Since that first map, we have made further tweaks and it is now starship quick Its also quieter on the Knocklink that it was on the standard map
It's a fair bit quicker than Ferrarinutters car and he is running 284bhp so I think its close or at 300. If I get a chance I'll pop over to PE in the next week and get some numbers.
I think Steven is still running the TD04 but he has bigger injectors in now and has some serious plans for his one.

My01 wrx ppp plus some ( mrt exhaust type thingy) boosting at 1.3bar and must be up near 285bhp ish not as fast as some but not to bad ,,, ps as quick as std p1 in a straight line, ran a small ( 0ff road , air strip) with m8. not bad ehy Steve

Car goes into PE next Wednesday for Up-pipe and remap, had the ecutek for a week now and can confirm what Pete says, its so much quicker than when it was first done.
Hopefully APS top mount intercooler should have arrived by the weekend so that will help Merv hit 300BHP with the remap.
When its been done i will post the results !!!
