Sport for aTurbo
#1
I've currently got a '01 Sport' Classic Shape and thinking of swapping to a '99 Turbo' with PPP!
Are there any Turbo owners out there who have previously owned Sports or people who have thought about swapping and stayed with their Sport??
Just after peoples thoughts really!
Cheers
Bry
P.S Been reading Scoobynet for while and finally decided to jump in.

You only live once.Forget the cost and have fun.
No doubt you can have fun in the sport, but you could have more in the turbo.
They are a bit juicy,I dont use mine much, but it seems I fill up more than usual.
Go to Islington you can get an old Brass for a score(£20).
Go up west you can get a right top bird, might cost a bit more but its WORTH IT.
Good luck with your choice.

The thing is, should I go for a car two years older??
Should I wait until next year, bite the bullet and get a new 03?
Anyway, I'm going for a look at the Turbo today (Hopefully). Maybe I should'nt because I know I'll want it!!!

Got a 97 Sport, nicely modded - insurance told me last time that a turbo with tracker would cost me the same.
Now placed a deposit on a MY03 WRX
PS turbo's don't cost any more to run - I only used to get 25 mpg out of my sport - 30 now I'm looking to sell it

Hello Bry,
Get yourself over to the Northern forum and have a look at The Raid Across the Border thread. I will be there in my Sport as will Bobmac in his Turbo lookalike Sport, plus loads of turbos inc fuglys, JDM's (imports) and an RB5 if Dave makes it
I bought a Sport as I was unsure about buying a turbo as I had never owned a turbo before let alone a four wheel drive car. I decided that my budget aloud me to either buy a newer Sport or an older Imported turbo so it was "less risky" I thought to get the Sport. Don't regret buying my DBM but now I know what and who I do, maybe I should have gone for the Import
Hope to see you on Sunday 24th November in Carlisle
Cheers, Jon
MY00 DBM Sport, gold alloys (of course ), Afterburner B/Box

Naturbo2000 is clearly off his head I would take that comment with a massive pinch of salt as I feel it's just a tiny bit ill-advised

My cars in the dealer having its back bumper re-sprayed right now (I wish subaru would learn to paint properly).
They gave me an 02 Sport this time and an 02 Turbo last time. I have also driven the 00 Turbo.
The Sport is dog slow. My old hot hatch (106GTi) would have creamed it. I think the girlfriends 1litre metro would probably keep up actually. The 02 turbo is far better, and IMHO the 00 turbo even better still.
Go drive and be amazed. Be prepared for mad fuel consumption though.
No offense.

SiPie,
What's wrong with my comment?
I own a Sport, and regularly have it serviced at Subaru dealers (Lister's Worcester) - The only difference in servicing costs is that I don't need oil for the centre diff (cos I don't have one). Fair enough, brakes cost more when they go, as does a turbo or a clutch - but how often do these really need replacing?
I'm running Proxes all round, so I don't get better tyre wear (or cheaper).
If you think it's an insurance thing, then you've no idea how much I'm being charged to run this sport....
The only (real) thing it comes down to is fuel, and either you're suggesting that I won't see 25mpg in a turbo or that I'm lying about seeing 25mpg in a sport.

I agree, I own a Sport and do not think the running costs differ too much between the two. I also think the Sport is a very good car, not got the Speed of the Turbo, but handles as good as. They are still fast enough to cost your licence

i had a my97 sport , had it for about 15month but had the same thought as you really, but then i thought what the hell! so i went and traded it in at t&c aberdeen for a my99 turbo and never looked back .although the sport is a good car but you really need to make the move and go for it!!!!
best of luck on whatever you choose to do

Nothing wrong with your comment at all...
My average fuel consumption over 19k miles = 16.2 mpg
Blown a turbo yet, hmmmm?
Do you think your toyo proxes wear at the same rate as a car with 240bhp
Do you think your brakes wear at the same rate?
Certain dealers have been known to have 2 labour rates. One for non turbos and another for turbos. Don't ask me why as it seems real unfair
Drive the turbo as it should be driven and compare.
Insurance doesn't even come into it as I'm an old **** too so that don't bother me
Sure others on here will be much more able to make more informed comparisons of the costs but those are just a few I can think of
Cheers
Edited as just read your comment re clutch and turbo going (apologies), my car's now done 83k and has had 3 clutches. Is on it's 2nd gearbox (quote for new one plus clutch was just under 4k, so obviously sourced a 2nd hand one).
So to sum up 19k miles = 12 tyres, 2 sets of front pads, 1 set of rear pads, 2 MAF sensors, 1 o2 sensor, 1 wheel bearing, hand brake pads.
So in reply to how often do clutches go = 3 times in 78k miles
Appreciate that the same costs may have occurred to a sport that had been driven 'spiritedly' but......... not too sure about that

I have a MY00 Sport and a MY96 WRX, and they are both great cars, yeah they are both expensive to run and service etc.
I have heavlily modified the sport so not really fair to compare it to the Turbo.
I use the Sport in the week for work and the WRX comes out for weekend plays .
I find the sport is just as enjoyable to drive as the WRX is. On the track I am sure it would be a completly different story.
Oh mods for Sports a re bloody expensive compared to a Turbo, induction kits cost a 3 times more than ones for Turbo's....

I now run a MY'02 GX (Sport), last car I ran was a MY'01 WRX.
So far I've found that the GX:
servicing is cheaper + not as often
I get 1/3 more MPG on my work journey
I pay 50% less on insurance.
I still get a grin on A/B roads, nearly as big, but not through acceleration.
Speaks for itself really.
PS. edited to add, if i didn't have other finiancial commitments over the next 1-2yrs I would have the turbo - basically if you can afford it - buy the turbo.

I've owned:-
Legacy Turbo, Sport 5 dr, Turbo 5dr
For me, it comes down to running costs only. If you can afford running a Turbo, buy one, but do your research !
For MPG I got 26 in the Legacy, 29 in the Sport and 24 now in the Turbo (average over 20k).
The Sport is a decent, chuckable car which you should never ever get into trouble with. In the Turbo, you just about could !

Cheers SiPie,
Glad you could be honest about it - but if I see an average fuel consumption of 16 and a bit mpg out of the turbo, I won't keep it for long (who am I kidding ).
I suspect you're exceptionally hard on the car (well maybe no-more than others on here, but you know what I mean). I don't wheelspin (and won't in a turbo) - catching a mean 4 wheel drift on public roads is not something I want to experience - 3 sets of tyres in 19k miles is incredible (I admit I just got 20k out of my Proxes here, but still reckon I'll see more than 15k on a turbo).
I love my sport and have had second thoughts about upgrading to a turbo - but only cos of the initial purchase cost. I like driving fast, but I also like to drive within my limits (which happen to be some way inside the car's ). One of the horror thoughts with a new turbo is that it might have too much grunt for me to want to drive - I like *NOT* breaking traction. MY03 helps in that sense cos of it's extra bulk and smoother turbo delivery should help make up for my own inability...
All my own 2p - but I don't believe the gulf in running costs between the two is necessarily as big as you'd think.

You know you want to do it
Go buy it and if you can't afford it then you can always sell it, undoubtedly for a massive loss though in current market
You are 100% correct, the car has obviously been driven hard but not stupidly. Purely for pleasure when conditions allow The joys of living in the sticks eh
And before I get flamed senseless, skid pan training, alot of driving tuition from police instructor (handy to have one in the family.....sometimes ), 16years NCB, and a clean license....blah blah
The gearbox prob I'm pretty certain was due to the guy who owned it previously (for the first 60 thousand miles or so) as I've never had gearbox probs in any of the 16 other cars I've owned, and it was a bit noisy when I bought it
Possibly the costs would be similar for me to drive a sport, but all I can comment on is what it costs for the turbo
But don't get me wrong... I ain't complaining.
It's worth every penny, the cost is easily balanced up by the sheer grin factor
Cheers
