Question

Lets face it, scoobies are pretty cheap to buy nowadays. We all complain about the high running and insurance costs, but I think that's the main thing keeping the cars out of the hands of the max power brigade.

I know there are exceptions (e.g. people will avoid insurance - I know of 1 indirect case where a 22 yr bought a 6k scoob and not insured)

What do you reckon?

I think the fact that they normally only charge you around 200 quid for not having insurance is what does it for me
Now if they totally threw the book at them (confiscate the car etc) i think it would be better

In the way most people try and fiddle that, it's fraud......

Besides, don't think most insurers have not got wise to the 50 year old Impreza "owning" housewife who just happens to try and get 19 year old son Wayne on as named driver.....

Judging by the number you seen driven by young planks on council estates I would say they must be pretty cheap to run. But then they would be if they don't insure or tax them

I was insured on all my dads cars at 18 and you could have got a few scoobies for the price of any one of them. you can also go fully comp on a shed and get third party on any other car you drive provided the other car is insured for another member of your house hold.

Question

what age do you draw the line at??

Im 22 bought my scoob at 21, fair enough I live at home with my parents, but I earn enough money to mot tax and insure my car, I could also afford to still do this and move out.

Maybe you should redefine "boys".

Oh and I dont claim to be mature either

By 'boys' I meant the lax power brigade (couldn't be asked to type such a long title).

A recent episode of eastenders was an example, where 4 thugs came out of an Impreza!!

Precisely

What was once a respected brand (ie when Colin MCrae was at the helm for Subaru) has now nothing more than an RS/XR3/Cosworth image.
The bubble has burst.
(Especially since some young ****** "burn't me up" in his Impreza Turbo ("P" reg) (LOL) on a trip home last week.
If the road had been dry and I was in the mood then maybe it would have been a different story, but I am not one to boast.
The way he did his overtaking manouvere just proved my point admirably. A lot of ******* drive Impreza Turbo's

I know this will upset a lot of people, but the poor image the 'classic' will get (already has?) is why I bought my Fugly.

No self respecting Lacks Power boy will be seen in one of those

Unfortunately, insurance prices aren't gonna stop boy racers from buying Scoobs. When people buy a Scoob, the cost of insurance quite often doesn't come into it.

Dear Mr Chip Butty, you have mentioned council estates on this
forum a few times now, I for one think that you dont actually
know what goes on- on council estates bacause you would never
take your precious tvr into one, one word SNOB!!!!!!!!!
If people who live on council estates can afford to buy a impreza
then bloody good luck to them! There are all sorts of idiots
out there who dont drive lagally, but lets not try and make the
idea of driving performance cars as a middle/upper class hoby,
lets face it, if we could all afford it, there are a lot nicer
cars that we would all be driving instead! and that includes you!

Agree with David Wallis on this.

I was only 22 when I bought my P1 - now im 23 with an Evo

But - I dont go round trying to 'burn people off' im a genuine enthusiast who insures (& declares mods) and taxes my car as I should do.

Does that make me a ****** becuase im young

Think is should be - will the scooby fall into the catagory of the boy racer brigade who add tacky bodtkits & Peco exhausts.

Its a grave day when Peco bring out a backbox for a scooby

In answer to the above, I would say yes - it will eventually, seems to be going the way of the Escort RS Turbo - partly due to the numbers of them around.

Where as the Evo will rein supreme (as it always does ) & always be looked at in awe

I'm 22, My car cost more than 6k and i paid a ridiculous amount in insurance

But yes, there will be scumbags that wont insure it. I seen a pretty good impreza the other night, with a couple of baseball cap boys sitting in it across from a nightclub. They didn't even look 20! and even if they were, there isn't a chance they would have got insurance, the car was a heavily modded import. That made me angry & sad

IMHO the point about these owners still living at home seems true - I know a few ppl in work that spend loads on cars and insurance (not scoobys though) all because they havn't moved out yet... Who can afford 2K insurance in the real world ie mortgage/bills etc

Or there are others that just buy them and abuse them (mine wasn't looked after properly for nearly a year before I got it!)

But on saying all that there are a few ppl under 25 that love and care for their car like us oldies do some give others a bad name...

gets down off horse and gets a drink (not milk)

BTW, I wouldn't say I'm an oldie - I bought my scooby when I was under 25! Now I'm 26, obviously going through a quarter-life crisis due to these types of posts

Sadly Tony Burns' post hits the nail on the head. Insurance, or lack of it, will always be an issue until the Government imposes harsh penalties on those who deliberatly drive without insurance.

They must be cheap if 17 year olds can afford to run them after 1 years expreience in work

....or maybe I am out of touch with how much 17 year olds with 1 years experience are worth!

I've had my cossie since I was 21, and unfortunately, the Scoob seems to be following the same path our cars went a few years back....

More worrying is that not only will a lot of these scoobs be thrashed and trashed, but methinks service intervals might soon begin to be ignored!

Any car passing into uncaring hands will eventually grind to a halt. Quite soon if both thrashed and neglected. If this car neglect does happen then you can expect any highly tuned lower capacity performance car engine (which is what the Subarus are) to terminate quickly BIG TIME. In this very expensive event, be prepared for Subaru, rightly or wrongly, to be regarded as of fragile build quality ....

Well, I'm 26 and would have bought my MY00 when 25 if my job situation had been more solid.. IT salaries (or other well-paid professions) can indeed support sports car ownership quite well from a young(ish) age - particularly if rent/mortgage isn't too expensive, but I never consider mine to be a boy racer's car.

If I modded it loads and put a big (big) wing on it, tinted the windscreen, put big flashy neon's on it, then yes, that's headed max power way and not my style at all. I hope I don't get seen like that (not accusing you of accusing me of it) but it doesn't bother me that much whether the joe in the street thinks "****" or "cool" when they see me pass. I enjoy driving it and looking at it and that's that, for me.
