OK, so no 4wd traction for wet days and its a bit ugly (not that the MY01 wins any beauty prizes) but gotta be the performance bargan of the year.

Interesting.
Although I've never beaten a scoob 0-60 (given up trying ) I have beaten one or two in my imported Honda Prelude Type S in the 60mph + bracket.
Stiill want to own a Scoob though, more fun to modify...!

Autocar MY98:
60-100 9.6
30-70 5.2
0-60 5.3
0-100 14.9

EVO MY99:
0-60 5.4
0-100 14.6
60-100 9.2

If it was a choice between MY01 and Civic I would go the Civic or a 330Ci depending on budget.

I read the article too - sounds pretty amazing.

Autocar reckons it has bags of grip too, in fact they even question the need for AWD on the Scoob.

Also, this month's Car mag. has the Type R winning over the Scoob, but has teh Clio 172, just pipping the Civic to the post (!!!)

I have a test drive booked for Saturday, if they can get it prepared in time.

Although my heart is telling me go for the scoob, my mind is saying go for the Honda.

Well, not quite, but thought the Autocar style headline was suitably ironic.

Anyway, this post is not a slagging match, just an observation.

Whatever, its bl**dy fast for £16K

Bloody thing is quicker to 100 than my Teg Not quite as much fun though, it appears

Gotta be good news for those who are waiting on one.

Yeah, well throw in a few corners and we'll, well, still lose!

Sorry, us Integra drivers have a habit of crying into out hankies and sobing "Id have gotten him in the twisties........." everytime we get beaten by anything

I have got to get the Teg going a bit faster, cant be doing with having these guys pull up, aircon, decent sound system, not deaf, and getting away faster from the lights as well!!

Now throw in a few twisties, and.........aw, forget it.

Don't forget the Honda only needs to be serviced every 12 months/12k miles, returns 30mpg amd is cheaper to insure. I'm booked in to test drive one next Monday and am considering cancelling my MY02 order.

These new Civics are pretty much the best bang for buck available.
With i-VTEC, you get (apparently) veru good gains with adding exhausts etc, as the engine characteristics are amazing, just about everything is variable according to the amount of air/fuel available.

Question

So what do you think about the 2.5 V6 MG-ZS then? Not a bad bit of kit for 16K, under that if you want a 5 door and they are fully loaded?

On paper they look pretty good but having previously owned a Civic VTi and having driven a few Integra R's, you have to thrash the bollocks of any vtec engine to get the most from it.

They is something nice about overtaking someone without having to change down two gears first

I kinda like these. and for the price they are mega bang for buck machines. ok, guess you could get a rather nice STi for 16, but not a brand spanking new 02 model STi.

True, it is more of a drivers car.

Not really looked at the Civic, but just swapped the better half's Imp Sport for a "new age" Clio 172. At £15.5K and from memory posting similar or better 0-60 than the Civic it deserves a good look.

Sure, you have to rev the Vtecs, but then that is all part of the appeal.

As for the twisty bits, I now recon that the Integra R has the edge on the Scoob, in the dry. When its wet, though, traction becomes an issue.

Loved the Scoob to bits (MY99) but the Integra's power delivery is just sooooo addictive

If I had the money I'd have both. I think realistically, in the real world for most enthusiastic drivers, there would be little between a pre MY01 UK Scoob, MY01 UK Scoob, Integra R and Civic R running in convoy.

Bet ya the Integra driver would be having the most fun though

Olly,

Assuming we're in the same town - that's the one. We have builders working so I have to put the scoob and the 172 out on the road during the day - very scary!

What do you drive? I'll keep an eye open for you.

Just one point to all you "on paper its loads better" type muppets.......

In the real world, you dont do 30-70 in 4th gear 'cause the gearings wrong - and your right in the "no turbo" rev bracket. So you change down to 3rd and it pulls like a train. Same type of thing for 60-100mph.

The Civic is normally aspirated = ZERO LAG. Therefore its always going to pull harder lower down?!?!? You need to rev the WRX to get it going!

So in the real world my friends, id be waving good bye to you in your Civic by changing down a gear and using the power in the right place!!

Try it on GT3 on the PS2 if you paper performance readers dont believe me

Cool

My take on this is simple

You can't beat All Wheel Drive

Thats not a Subaru plug, that goes for any vehicle. Personaly, if I come out of the motor trade I will never own a vehicle that isn't AWD

Someone want to explain to this muppet that the Vtec engines are all about power at high revs, and the scoobs best asset is its torque???

No offence mate, but you've just described the conditons when that little civic (or my Teg for that matter, is likely to rather embarrass a standard MY01 a scoob. THe figures quoted above are not "in gear" but "through the gears to redline" figures

hmm zero lag... not really because they've got variable valve timings so until they go over 4K there just tickin over which is comparable to a turbo lag although technically completely different.

well I'm DEFINATLY tempted by a testdrive although I luv my scoob

Ill test drive one for sure, Honda UK have said the 0-60MPh time is 6.4 secs, and state it is definitely faster than the Teg, though Ive yet to see half a loaf of bread go faster than my Teg (actually, there was this one time........)

Hopefully the looks are better in the flesh, the 3 door doesnt look half bad, so with lots of tweaks in the looks department, the CTR might be alright.

These things don't even think about having any go until 5500 revs. To keep any pace up you need to be in the 6000-8000 revs range (very high red line on these), and you do get a kick at the point where the timing changes, this is similar feel to the turbo kick in a scooby at 2500-3000 revs.

You may think that is a great for a drivers car but think to yourself whether you want to drive at 7000 revs all the time (noise etc). In my case I soon got fed up with this and find the scoobys power delivery infinitely preferable.

Ok - hands up - im a muppet

But i stand by my point that using the paper figures is a crap way to view the car!!! Diablo quotes the figures for 60-100 etc.

I remember seeing these 0-100 etc figures, and thinking that the gearing of the MY01 WRX means its always going to SEEM CRAP on paper.

The test put the WRX right in the laggy 2250 - 3250 range, where id be the first to admit it doenst do a lot. It only really gets going in boost in 4th gear at say 80mph!!!!! So the point im making is ID CHANGE INTO 3rd to do most of the tests That way i'd use the impreza power rather than leaving it in the "lag zone".

6.4 secs to 60 is very respectable, especially when you consider that a lot of people (ie ME) aren't prepared to sh@g their clutch up by doing drag starts. I've done 2 since I bought the scoob, and the smell of burning clutch plates is still coming off the upholstery The usual launch method I use probably sees me hitting 60 in 6.5 - 7 seconds, so 'on paper' figures mean little as far as the scoob's concerned, unless you fancy forking out for a new clutch every 5000 miles.

I'm gonna try and get a test drive in the Civic, the sound as a VTEC comes on song is almost motorbike-esque, plus having owned a 205 GTI for 6 years I quite like cars that can be revved all day long whilst still remaining bulletproof.
