help id'ing motor

I am trying to help a mate identify a motor. It is an early EJ20(T). I think it came from a legacy turbo, but he assures me it is from a WRX. Here are a few items that may help.
- Turbo intake is behind the intake manifold runners, not under them.
- turbo has a black metal duct that runs up to the hood scoop for cooling.
I will try and post a picture if I can get it to work. If it is from a WRX it has to be an early version. Thanks to those that can help.
