My opinion from reading all the engine destruction threads and stuff is to buy a standard one and leave it standard, use 98ron fuel (optimax) fit a knocklink and AFR monitor..
Or modify it sensibly having a proper ecu remap done at the same time as the modifications... and again after every mod.. and again
fit a knocklink and AFR monitor..

From what i have read the STI5 is one of the best (if not the best) old shape Subaru Impreza.
Its comes in a really sexy steel blue (grey) runing about 280BHP.
You need to run the STI5 in 98RON fuel and the insurance is high too.
If i had the money i would buy one but i wouldnt get insured on it.

STU,
I had one and it was great. It remained totally standard and was service properly. It ran on Optimax without booster and did 22k miles in a year. Perfect
I'd have another one if I was doing less miles.
