Matt,
I'm no guru and the subject is massive so here goes.

Essentailly the difference in putting a different size tyre / wheel on the car will have an effect on handling and possiblly on the accuracy of the speedo reading by a couple of precent.

Firstly what does the reading mean, the tyre size 215/55 indicates the following:-
1. The first number is the width of the tyre in your case 215mm wide.
2. The second number indicates the profile (height) of the tyre a a percentage of the width so your tyre height/size is 55% of 215mm width = 118.25mm of rubber

3. The wheel size I hope is self explanitaty 17inches = 431.8mm diameter

How is theis of use ?
To workout the rolling circumfernce of the wheel eg how far the car travels per wheel revolution.

To do this you need to apply the following equation pye x D (eg 3.14 x (tyre depth x2)+ wheel Diameter)
Again in your case: 3.14 (118.25*2)+ 431.8) =2098.46 mm
If you compare this to you original tyre which on a MY97 may be 205/55 R15
The rolling circumference is 1904.41mm

If you assume the original configuration gives a 100% accurate read out on the speed / mileometer then compare by new/old x100 you will get the percentage discrepency which in this case would be 10.1% so you would be travelling 10% faster and further than your instruments indicate.

Other factors to bear in mind.
The lower the profile the smaller the band of rubber around the wheel and so the stiffer the tyre side wall. This gives a harder ride and also allows quicker cornering in the correct conditions however they are more likely to let go in an unfrogiving way ie. All of a sudden.
The opposite is true of higher profile tyres
hence the reason a 2CV is probably the ultimate Wheel squeal machine.

By putting wider tyres on will give more contact with the road and has many effects some of which are good and others bad and could be subject to further disscusion I'm sure.

Essentailly you can put what ever size tyre / wheel combination you wish solong as they fit over the barkes and inside the arches but you need to be aware of the above points because the difference wiil be noticeable and may or maynot suit you driving style and ride prefernces.

I hope that you find this of use

Mitch
