Isn't it only the bug-eye versions where the track is different between the saloon and wagon? I'm sure i read a thread last week about the same thing.

edited cuz P20SPD got there first...

Question

Any advice appreciated please.

Have heard that some people actually prefer the handling of the wagon in comparison to the saloon .

I'm in need of a bit more boot space (mountain biking etc) and have been toying (reluctantly ) with the idea of swapping saloon for wagon.

I drive a UKmy99 saloon therefore obviously looking to change for roughly the same year/spec etc......

Anyone driven both over decent periods of time?

Thanks in advance

I went from a 98 saloon to an 01 wagon. It's great for bikes, kit and sleeping. Handling improved but that's the redesign.

I think the handling difference is directly related to how many labradors you have in the back

Oh, and how much driver training and track days you've done ....sorry guys, couldn't resist a wee joke-a-roony

I had a 99uk 4 door and thought it handled well. Went to a MY00 wagon, and whilst initial thoughts were "its worse", once i got used to it i think it does handle better, IMHO.

Mine definately handles better now though, as i have coilovers.

I think the handling difference is very small. Having said that though, the track on the wagon is narrower.

I always suspected my MY01 wagon tended a tiny bit more to oversteer than the saloon. That might be why people like it more?

Saloons are more prone to fuel surge induced handling problems.

Classic track is the same width IIRC, its the Fugleys that have the different track widths.

Assuming you drive a scooby, I really hope you don't regret that statement

Cool

I have driven both and although its not a good comparison as the saloon is a P1 - I think the wagon handles well.

I too own one so I cart lots of crap around !! - and its the perfect compromise car.

If you want a drive in one pop up - you only live down the road from me.

On my second Wagon. This one is an STi 6. Driven several saloons and a two door but this wagon handles as well as anything (Now. Scooby Sport put a non limited slip 3.54 diff in the rear with a 3.9 front diff and it took a while to find the cause of handling and braking problems which disappeared with the fitment of a 3.9 rear LSD) Anybody who has seen the car on track can comment on the handling compared to other Scoobs. It is certainly not any worse.

Take one of a similair spec out for a shakedown

IF i was to buy another Impreza, it would be another estate, sorry! wagon I never needed the boot space, but handling is better, cause of the *supposed* stiffer chassis, and the torque split is more biased towards the back, to cope with the loads it's designed to take, I think they are 65/35 toward the rear

And they look less boy racer-ish IMO!

As above, a very marginal difference on the classic shape - I don't think you are going to notice much difference.

I think my MY99 has more character about the shape than the new Audi A4 Avant I had before. Something to do with the 'hips'/ rear arches !

I've fitted bikes and regularly one of the largest dogs on the planet in it.

Don't forget the stealth factor either.

Stealth factor is and i have not been stopped once in the wagon, whereas the saloon was quite regular.

Get a wagon, fit the prodrive springs and you will love it.

I had mine on a track day at prodrive earlier this year and it was excellent fun. Never lost any ground on the saloons and im definatley no Colin Mcrae.

They even look cool,

Ali
