Why are some drivers so STUPID?!?! Driving along Middleton Boulevard today, I spot a new sign that wasn't there yesterday. Blue, white lettering, it says 'POLICE SPEED CHECK AREA'. Good idea to stick to the speed limit, so I'm at 40 (as are pretty much everyone else at this point before you get to the underpass) and am in the outside lane. Go under the underpass (me still at 40) and remain in the outside lane to let traffic filter in from the Derby Road sliproad. Then the radar detector starts beeping away. Stay at 40 thinks I, as that's the speed limit along there. Next thing I know, before I've had a chance to get into the inside lane, my rear view mirror is full of artic front grille. He flashes me, then with no apparent indication (but I couldn't have seen them anyway, think they were below my bumper level) dives into the inside lane and starts to pass me as we go onto the flyover. I can't now get into the inside lane so the next ar5eh0Łe pulls up to about 3 feet from my rear bumper. I am not going to be bullied into making an unsafe manoeuver into the middle lane, nor am I going to break the speed limit as the radar detector is still pinging away. He cuts into what is now the middle lane (in the gap that I would have been able to get into if he'd been a bit more patient) as we begin to come off the flyover and gets stuck in the traffic. We all then pass the national speed limit sign so the safest thing I can do is accelerate up to 70 (dual carriageway, national speed limit), which is what I do, especially as the radar detector has now gone quiet.
If my car had a white paint job with those natty blue lights on top, you can bet that I wouldn't have had any problems, and everyone would have been good little boys and girls.
