Several PC's (including mine) at my place had been infected despite firewalls and daily virus updates.

Peeps,

For anyone not aware, there is a very nasty new Virus (technically a Worm) going around at the moment. I have spent the last two days helping out internal IT people make sure that all the company machines are protected.

We found that surfing a web page that has been "infected" is enough to get the Worm and you don't even have to do anything for it to infecft your machine - it can do that all by itself.

Quick tips on how to protect your machine:

1. If running NT4, make sure you have Service Pack 6a with the Q299444 hotfixes
2. If running Windows 2000, make sure you have SP2
3. Make sure you are using Internet Explorer 5.5 SP2 or newer
4. Make sure you don't have any shares on your pc that give the "Everyone" group anything greater than read access
5. Make sure you have a Firewall
6. Make sure you have up to date Virus software and run a scan on *all* files as this infects a lot more than executabels.....

Matt, there's more info on this in the Non-scooby section.

BUT: Win2k with SP2 IS STILL VULNERABLE!
You also need several hotfixes to become protected.

Check the MS security site and get ALL the latest hotfixes.

Also, make sure the antivirus software has active protection enabled on ALL files. By default they often just do EXE type files and don't include the .EML files that this one makes use of.

I got a virus on my home PC and the office got the Nimda worm. Luckily, the one I got wasn't that serious, but I still had to reformat my hard drive.

I think it shows us the value of up-to-date virus software and regularly updating it!

Give me a shout next time, you should never need to reformat.

Does Nimda have a damaging payload, or is it just a pain in the butt?

Unfortunately, it doesn't protect you from getting it though - Virus software can only spot it once you're infected

That's why you need the above versions to protect you from getting it in the 1st place....
