Can anyone tell me what the difference is between a 93-94WRX and a STI1?? a friend has a smashed Scoob which he was told was a STI..
He bought it from a salvage co. as a rally project, it is a 93 car and the only things i can spot are.. ABS/Red-pink dampers/STI wording on boot...
Any ideas people??
thanks
Rob

AFAIK the first STI were just modified WRX from the production line. It was just a tweaked version rather than being a purpose built model in its own right. Have you had a look at the SIDC FAQ ?
There were no MY93 STIs AFAIK the first ones were MY94 you can check the MY by the model code shoudl be GC8B48D (assumign its a 4 door) porblem is the WRX has the same model code. It was 250PS ratehr than the 240PS of the WRX.

You need to check the 'model designation' not the other number...
Mine is a MY93 advertised as a STi but on further invesigation it is the first of the WRX varients, which apparently means they 'tested' the STi water with it before making an actual STi in October MY93 (they also should have a production number sticker on rear window, might of been moved to front)
Hope this helps
* It should have at least rear wash wipe, IC Water spray and ABS to qualify this...

Ok, as a STI 1 owner, here's some points.....
1. STI 1 normally DON'T have ABS, they have intercooler spray instead. I believe this is in fact the case with most STI variants.
2. The first STI's were actually WRX's taken off the Subaru production line, and sent to STI where the engines were hand-built, and the suspension and other bits tweaked. Part of the problem with the STI 1 is that what changes were done to the engine seem to vary from car to car - remember, STI were experimenting with the model, and what they could do with it. Potential upgrades include STI pistions, cams etc etc. Should have a closed deck block, although there have I believe been some STI 1 examples found with open deck blocks.
3. STI 1 should have a pink plaque on the driver side engine bay, describing the build number and quantity, ie. mine says "24 from 100", meaning car 24 of 100 built that year. The usual pink strut braces should be there, as well as the pink badges on the bodywork, and on my car STI seats.
4. On my car at least, the ECU has an unusual number designation on it, as well as pink STI badges. This may just be my car, however.
