Question

Can't decide. All I know is that I hate my BMW and I don't want another Scoob (Had 2). Delivery of the Focus would be May 2003.

Comments please

If not a scoob then perhaps a move to the darkside? But don't get an RS.

One things for sure, It would hold it's value way better than a WRX.
I think the RS is probably a great buy. As long as you like it when you test it. Then you just have to weigh up all the criteria, i.e. is it fit for your needs. Big enough, sporty enough, comfy enough, etc.

However, i have yet to try one. But it looks like it would be a good buy.

Might help if you say

1. Why you dont like the BMW

2. What bits you liked and disliked on the Scooby.

Rumour mill at the Motorshow is that they have been having some mechanical problems recently with the RS's after the press launch. Also Ive yet to see a real test of it in the wet. Is the ride EVO hard which might be fun on the test drive, but tiring 6 months into ownership.

What happens when you get use to a FWD car with 220bhp ?

As a FWD finished product then fine but if you get bored easily and crave more power then its RWD or AWD car you need.

If you will be happy with 220bhp then go for it.

My BMW is a 2 litre auto (say no more). I loved my Scoobs, but inferior build quality and obnoxious dealers along with appalling resale figures mean I will not return to Scoob ownership.

My mate has had 2 EVO 6's and an EVO 7. Nice enough, but the ride is too hard for my liking.

The downside of the RS is that I can't get a test drive at all. There is no demo car on the Ford fleet. I asked about the press car and was told that it was impossible Quite simply there appears to be enough people who are prepared to buy them 'Off Plan'.

If I wait until after TG next week the wait will increase as there is essentially one car per dealer per month!!!!!!!!!

Tony,
take the totally blinkered points of view from here

and read a bias point of view from here

and make your mind up from there. Think the ride may be a bit harsh on the RS too but try and find out if anyone near you will take delivery soon and give you a passenger lap in one

Paul

I'd say get down to your dealer and order one if you possibly can.
Even if you hate it, and think it's a pile of ****e when it arrives, I guarantee you will be able to sell it for a tidy profit should you want to.

Tony,

I've had two new Fords and two new Scoobs. From my experience your comments "Inferior build quality and obnoxious dealers along with appalling resale figures" apply to the Fords and not the Scoobs!

Why not import a MY03 at 17k ish and find a dealer you are happy with (they're not all bad - just most )

Cheers,

Ian.

I've been looking for a car to replace my MY99 Impreza for about 6 months now and I've finally chosen a RS Focus which I ordered a few weeks ago and it's supposed to be being built in January.

I love the Impreza and really have no problems with it but after 3 years you need to change or else you miss out on driving other cars don't you !

The new bug/bong/blob eyed Impreza just doesn't do it for me so that has never been on my list. I looked for a R33GTR Skyline for a while (which everyone seems to do - lol) but finding an unmodified one is pretty damn hard and I gave up in the end.

EVO's are too "in your face" for me and there's no way I could live with a rear wing that's actually bigger than the one on the Impreza

I was tempted with something fast from Germany but the Euro has strengthened so much over the last year that it is no longer the bargain that it used to be so the LHD 993/mcoupe idea went out of the window.

We have Focus pool cars at work and I regularly get the chance to thrash them and even the bog standard ones handle impressively so with a 2litre turbo I'm sure the RS will be a winner. The reviews all seem favourable apart from a couple of comments about it being a handful on bumpy roads but that should help keep you from falling asleep and I actually prefer a car that let's you know what's happening I also don't much like the interior of the RS but that's not too high up on my priorities list.

After speaking with a few dealers I got the feeling that there isn't a lot of time to be wasted if you want an RS so I put my deposit down without a test drive. You could say that I fell for the sales pitch but if you read this press release (published today) they say that the waiting list is now 12 months.

http://media.ford.com/article_displa...ticle_id=13460

There are a lot of Ford dealers out there so I'm sure you could do better than that if you ring around.

go for it

I posted a couple of reviews here. For Chins benefit the second one is about a comparison with other Fords in the wet, the Focus did not do well. Looks like you should get a decent test drive before committing, IMHO.

Don't get the RS Focus mate
IMHO Ford have taken a long time getting this car into production, and I reckon that they have developed the Focus Cosworth on the back of it. The limited build and Price confirms this to me also. Also originaly the Focus Cos was due in 2003
I have asked the question of people who should know and have just got a smug grin.

I'm waiting for the Cos

If I was going to go back to a Ford i would def. get a Mondeo ST220. I had a bog mondeo and a bog focus. I loved the mondeo (even tho' everyone else thought it was cr*p) didn't like the Focus so much, seemed too high, swayed about in corners and not nearly as comfortable on a long journey. Evo rate their new Mondeo. In fact, I've convinced myself... where's the number of Dagenham Motors gone... Anyone want to buy my STi ?

You can't buy the car without test driving it.

If it's been developed and honed as a good track car, then the ride might be as hard as an Evo VII.

If I wanted something raw, I'd try and save the pennies for an Evo VII RS Sprint for 26 ish from Extreme/Ralliart.

At least there'd be less of them on the roads.

Question

A BOY RACERS CAR!!!!!!!!!
That would be a scoob too then and it will be a long time before the average "Boy Racer" can afford a Focus RS.

Ford RS, looks and sounds pants to me, why fork out for a new ford and loose loads of £££, if u think u can make money on one u must be joking me! We all know that fords are crap and they depreciate more than a Daewoo,so why buy one? Jap cars are the only real performance car worth going for IMHO. So just buy a Skyline or an Evo and have a car with some real power not this 220bhp FWD rubbish.

whereas the Supra, that was a car suffered from so little depreciation that you needed a spirit level to measure (or should that be a plumb line )

lol its defo a ford thing, its all about personal taste, i think its a nice looker etc etc with good performance so i ordered one back in july for the wife, but on the other hand id rather hell freeze over than drive a type r or clio 172, i dont think that it can be compared to an evo or sti cos there in a totally different league, but in my book it wins hands down against those other two $hit boxes i mentioned

if u want it go for it,its your opinion that counts the most
