Spotted a few drops of oil under the rear diff yesterday. Looked this morning and the rear diff has a covering of wet oil. Dealer's going to look at it tomorrow morning, but what could have suddenly caused this?

It's not coming from either the filler or the drain plug, but seems to be towards the front of the diff as it's all over the propshaft 'ahead' of the diff. Where's the centre diff -- near the front or the back?

Thumbs down

My rear diff is leaking too! but it looks as if it's coming from the drive shaft. Not too bad at the mo, should last until the next service in a month or so.

Although this was rather overshadowed by yesterday's events, for everyone's info my local dealer has diagnosed it as a leaking pinion seal and is ordering the part. Apparently they've never seen that happen before. (I broke the downpipe on a Saab once and the Saab dealer said they'd never seen that before either). Perhaps I should get a tank.

I should be careful, Floyd. I got the manual out and the rear diff only holds 0.8 litres (i.e. around a pint-and-a-half) so there's not much in there to leak out!

A dealer told me my sti had the same a while back... told me it was common and all they needed to do was tighten itup.. I saw no problems after this.

on my RB5 it was leaking where the propshaft goes into the diff.Tileys replaced the seal under warranty and did it while I waited ,after ordering the part.took about an hour. They have never done one before.my car has 28000 miles.

Mine's out of warranty, so it's around 100 quid + VAT, but it's the same as David Z -- leaking from where the propshaft enters. 49000 miles.
