I guess the question is in the subject... How long is the right time to let an engine run for...

All advice appreciated...

Normally never use it, but after a really hard thrash maybe 30 seconds max. I see people set their timers to 2 minutes + !! what a waste of fuel !!

After normal driving 1 minute. After a thrash/long run, 3 mins. It takes me this long to get the wheel clamp and disklok on anyway.

Agree with Jerome, I dont have a timer on the P1.. but by the time you fart around putting on clamps ect.. three mins is about right :-)

So would that be enough to prolong the life of my turbo (95' WRX) and for the bearings to cool down???

(you can see I'm not the technical one)...

I wouldn't bother. I never used a TT on my STI IV and rarely waited for it to cool down. The only exception being that if I'd been for a hard thrash and hadn't had a slow bit for the last 2-3 miles of the journey I'd give it 10-15s just before getting out of the car (usually whilst I got my stuff together).

Did 45k in 3.5 years, and never had any problems.

IMO, TT's are a gimmick. Does anyone actually have any long-term evidence that sitting with the engine running for 2 minutes actually makes a blind bit of difference?

Like chaps have said, by the time the disklock gets put on, keys found, **** retreived from under the passenger seat and mobile unplugged from handsfree... the cars ready to be switched off

Cool

I let mine run for 30 seconds if I'm in the mood, but if the car has had a sound thrashing, I do the last 3-4 miles of my journey in high gear at low revs to get plenty of cool air over both the engine & the transmission/brakes. This has a far more beneficial effect than leaving your car stood building up heat in the engine bay.
As MarkO says they are probably more a gimmick to let you and others appreciate your big bore exhaust when you leave the caron pub carparks

I asked the dealer about this when I picked up my STi. His reply was: It's not really necessary on the modern turbos. I try to drive the last bit of the journey gently - easy when going home as I always potter thru' residential areas. What do you do when you've just pulled off the M'way for fuel though? Sit on the forecourt for 2 mins before filling up?

Charlie.

Exactly. I wonder how many 911 Turbo owners run turbo timers.

I wonder how many 911 Turbos aren't driven by rich blonde women who don't know what a rev counter is ?

Seriously, it's just common sense. You wouldn't (shouldn't) rag the car from cold, and so you warm it up.... makes sense to warm it down too....
