when you see power output figures for engines they are sometimes quoted in "bhp" and sometimes "ps".
i know that the two usually are quite a similar number, but i assume that "ps" is a metric measurement of power output, so what does it stand for and what is the measurement ????

Here is a quote taken from an article (not scooby, but explains it), hope it helps:
"The engine power rating is 190 PS (Pferde Starke), which is 1.37% less than Imperial horsepower, so 190 multiplied by 0.9867 is...add one, take away six, divide by all means, remember it's a wooden ruler....187-and-a-bit bhp"

PS stands for Pferdestärke. Which is a german word. The german word for horse is "Pferde" and the word "stärke" means strong or powerful.
1 PS is equal to 735 Watts.
1 BHP is equal to 746 Watts.
I think therefore this must stem from german horses being, on average, weaker than british ones. ;-)
