I'm looking at buying a 99 Impreza STi Type-R. 28K miles, 300Bhp.

Does anyone have any advice and what areas should I pay particular attention to?

I know its a Japanese import but is there anything else I should take into consideration?

Thanks

John

I have been told they have no ABs & also shorter geared, ie less top end but tons of acceleration, If you know or find out can you let me know as I may be looking at one also but its still in Japan at the moment

Only 160?
Pah! My UK turbo, '98 will leave that for dead, especially on the twisties.

My mates STi V Type R would "only" hit 142 on a GPS speedo flat out in fifth!

99 is the version 5. These have been known to have the no3 bearing pop. Be careful.

Warranty is not as comprehensive as for uk cars.
Most Subaru dealers will not touch them
DOnt run v-well on 95 ron or 97 for that.

BUT
You get a blinding car
Some subaru dealers will service them ie Lavender in Enfield, london
You can get an ecu re-map for the car to run safely on 97ron.
You get an adjustable diff :-)))))
Quick steer rack
Nice suspension
etc
etc
etc.
Ive got an year 2000 Sti 6 Type r V-limited and i have had nothing but joy out of it. Only downside is the petrol consumption.

160 indicated.

My STI IV Type-R proved to be over-reading by 10mph at 100mph when I used a GPS system to get the real speed.

Most TypeR Impreza's dont have a quick rack.

Dont ever run it on 95 RON

Run it on 97RON plus an octane booster or optimax plus an octane booster if you retain the OEM ECU.

These cars are very quick compared to a UK spec standard car, great value for money.

Looking at 11-12K range.

Is there any other hidden costs?

Any insurance company recommendations?

Cool

For insurance, try Tom Butler at Schofield. Can't remember the URL, but he posts on here as 'Rum'.

Bear in mind, though, that premiums for imports are a nightmare - it's one of the reasons I got rid of mine.

I would consider getting a car in fro Japan. Service intervals are every 4000km over there and they are run on 100ron so at least you know the car has been looked after to some degree. BUT you always get the odd one which has been neglected.
If you do get an import try Newera imports and as soon as it arrives try getting a re-map so you dont have to run it on Optimax too long with standard map.

Cheers

An import type r should not cost much more than a p1. Insurances use to charge a lot at first due to high risk plus the fact that parts were not available from subaru uk. Now that the P1 is available parts for type r's are not so much of a problem.

Unhappy

I read drivetrain quite alot thanks. just don't hear about the "normal" imprezas popping as much and quite like the type r(a)'s do. Must because of the stress or summit

I thought the idea of the thread was to advise Scoobywon't with possible problems and delights.... ergo, make sure the engine don't sound more like a bag of spanners rattling in the boot then they already do, not to make my pennies worth seem like a button.

WHether its a UK impreza or a JDM impreza some of them will pop for some reason! It can be for any one of a million reasons. With the Jap spec models as well as the UK models i would invest a bit of money in an ecu remap, fmic and uprated fuel and oil pump just to keep things safe. Most of the blow ups have orginated from faulty or in-efficient parts that i mentioned. For the JDM cars a remap to run on Optimax or 97 ron is a must! Oil changes are also very important. Japanese dealers suggest one every 4000km.

Cheers

i wouldent get a type r i would get a p1 because subaru dears are few and far between and u dont want to drive lightlears away to get the beast serviced p1's are going oround for as little as 21 grand now for a orignal p1 as in 1-500 not the extra ones they made. plus they look nicer aswell wich is a bonus poseing down your high street on a saturday!!! and the p1 withh keep its price better than a type r if you keep it nice and clean

Gez you wouldn't happen to live around the Enfield region as i also take the car to Lavender hill, great people.

John definantly try Privillge i pay £1600 with the other half on and mods declared.

Taron as for getting a P1 over a Type R lets just remember what a P1 actually is. I paid £20,000 for STI5 Type R brand new from an offical subaru dealer in Cyprus, so me thinks in what i saved over a P1 went to some good mods. I've had 2 years of trouble free mileage so wouldn't agree that jap imports are less reliable then uk cars. All cars will last well if cared for.

i am with priviledge. It's my postcode plus the claims i had for a breakin/crash that is killing me.

Dont by a typeR/RA, only buy a P1? Are you nuts? I paid £12,600 for my STi5 TypeRA V-Ltd with 25K miles, one owner, FSH, imported by Park Lane brand new. I bought it with a dodgy gearbox, which has just cost me £900 to get rebuilt including a clutch swap, gear ratio swap. If i wasnt using it on track that would have been the total cost (i have installed AP's, LedaB etc).

Now try telling me again not to buy a TypeR/RA and pay £10K more for a P1, i dont think so. (and yes, i got a bargain, but £15K would get you what i have normally)
