Thanks IM

Monday 20th August- Pondlife in lorry takes nearside mirror off car and creases wing and despite me following him for half a mile headlights ablaze, does not stop!!
Tuesday 21st August- Police given completed details and accident report form to trace other vehicle as it was his fault and I have witness to this effect. Order new mirror from dealer, "available Friday" Goody, car with no mirror is not pleasant.
Friday 24th August- Early afternoon, phonecall fron dealer, mirror not arrived. None in country.
Sunday 26th August- Pulled at 7am on way to Silverstone for no mirror! Advised Police IM said none in country. I agree with Police in that it is IM's problem, but I should not drive car.
Tuesday 28th August- Speak to IM 1st thing. None for 3 weeks!! Point out I have already been pulled and it is dangerous also. "Will your insurance co. pay for a courtesy car until mirror arrives?" IM want my insurance to pay for a hire car because they cannot get a mirror. 'Kin marvellous.
Wednesday 29th August- White mirror fitted to car by dealer. Consider please that you cannot get a white WRX. Not sure how this was done, but certain people at this dealer look after and are working for the customer. They know who they are. There are also people there who I wish would go back to selling Vauxhall's or whatever it was they used to do. Police advise it can take 6 months to follow up accident but may prosecute me in the meantime because I moved 2 years ago and have not changed the address on my licence.
To all, Look for a blue WRX at Trax public car park on Sunday afternoon or Woodpecker on Saturday with a white mirror. It looks great.
I do however have an appropriate sticker on the offending mirror."Thanks IM. Nice support"
All this is my own fault. I committed a schoolboy error and bought a UK car to avoid problems like this. Should have saved the £1000's and bought a second car for moments like this.
Sti7 is a definite no no now for a UK car. Might be import from Europe although whilst I love the car I am tempted to buy a new Pajero for work and a Westfield/Caterham for track/ weekends. I am that brassed off with the whole situation.
To those who have listened to me drivel on about the comfort zone of a UK car on this bb, I wholeheartedly apologize and take it all back.

Get a white mirror for the other side, then paint the roof white, and you can look like a new mini. In the same way that old minis used to have union jacks on the roof, you could paint a big red circle on it
The response from the police doesn't surprise me. Remember, if you drive an 'abnormal' car (i.e. not something like a 1.6 Cavalier or Primera) you must be a criminal

Sorry to hear about your woes Stevie, I though I was hard done by when I tried to get a replacement mirror for my then 11 year old Alfa GTV6 and was told by a Fiat/Alfa dealer that they often skip all old parts once the '10 year obligation' to stock them runs out rather than selling them on to would be specialists!
Your comment about the possiblity of getting gnobbled for not changing your adress on your licence address reminds me to think about getting it done. (I moved about6 times in 6 years at one point in and out of student flats and up and down the country with work etc.)
IMHO, it's hard to see the point of keeping your licence address up to date.
What do they use that information for anyway?
So long as the V5 is correctly addressed to the current vehicle keeper, they could track a car down to it's keeper from it's registration mark via DVLA but having your address on your licence makes about as much sense to me as having it on your passport (which you don't of course, just an emergency contact!)
Hope you get it nicely painted-up soon.

Maybe it's my age, I remember when wing/door mirrors were an optional extra (except on vans etc.)
Is it really a stoppable offence now not to have door/wing mirrors? Or is it only vehicles manufactured after a certain year?

According to Butterworths:
Road Vehicles (Construction and Use) Regulations 1986 states that every passenger vehicle first used on or after 1st june 1978 must have one interior rear view mirror and at least one exterior rear view mirror fitted to the OFFSIDE of the vehicle. If the Interior mirror does not give an adequate view of the rear then an additional exterior rear view mirror must be fitted to the NEARSIDE.

Sorry Webmaster.Just my very pathetic joke.
(I didn't realise that use of the M word on the general forum could be considered offensive/libel).
Didn't mean to be disrepective to International Motors who I have always found to be very helpful.

Ian,
You are half right. The photocard licence doesn't have your address on it but it is supplemented by a nice separate sheet of paper which does quote your address AND has a little extra space left over for up to 12 of those lovely points!

Webmaster,
Sorry, I am not trying to create another IM are evil thread, just highlighting a problem I am 'enjoying' which I would have expected if I had bought an import, not a UK car. IM are very friendly, I felt very sorry for the guy there who had to tell me it would be 3 weeks. I just thought the 3 weeks was unnacceptable, that's all.
As for the Police and the mirror, they appeared convinced that as the car had one as standard, it was illegal to use. I tend to agree with this but of far more importance is the fact that it is dangerous. Dual carriageways and motorways are awful without it.

I live in an area with extremely narrow streets and even with the wing mirrors folded in, the chances of one being taken off is quite high. I would be none to impressed if a dealer could not source what is surely the kind of part that is likely to be needed the most. Still no nearer to being convinced that a UK car is an advantage.
As for photocard licences, they are more hassle to get the address changed than the old paper ones (I've changed mine 3 times for various reasons). Both parts have to be sent off with the relevant (D750?) form. It also can take several weeks to arrive. Not much cop if you get a 7 day producer.

Sorry, I was wrong about the address/photocard point. Do they put your points on them as well?
As you might have guessed, I don't have one myself yet, as it looked like such a hassle to change over what with sending off your passport and old licence for several weeks etc.
Why can't you do it over the counter in a post office or police station!
Now I'm out here in the land of melted cheese, I'll have to hand mine in - in exchange for a Swiss one, eventually.
They don't have a points system out here but don't linke speeding either.
Justr under 60mph in a 30mph zone would get you 3 nights free accomodation plus a '25% of net monthly revenue fine'!
Something similar got me 3 points and a £100 fine in UK back in '95!
PS. I assume that they have your address on them so they can be used as an alternative 'Identity card'.
PS2. sorry if this is a thread-HiJack..

But coming back to the original point 'bout Plod. It's just so typical that the perp of the original crime may or may not be traced in 6 mths. But cos Steve reported it he gets all the hassel cos the boy in Blus can't be bothered with the paper trail
If he said they were going over 32 in a 30 he may have had more joy.

Stephen (Read),
You can go to the post office counter now with all the relevant forms and your pasport. The counter person looks at you passport (then gives it back) and stamps the relevant place and your forms get sent to the DVLC.
Back on the original thread, there seem to be far to many stories these days about crims getting away with murder because it's too much hassle to follow up, but people who are generally law abiding are getting more hassle. OK, it may be an offence to not change the address on your licence, but providing there was no intent to mislead/defraud etc, surely a warning would suffice.

IM stands for International Motors
All companies have supply problems from time to time.
If you get pulled driving an illegal car, it is not the fault of IM.
The fact that they could not provide the wing mirror *is* (probably) their fault (or at least the buck stops with them).
Let's not start a "IM are evil" thread?
Best regards

I didn't think it was a legal requirement to have a nearside mirror, especially since many older cars weren't fitted with them and many newer cars have them taken off and the drivers don't appear to bother to rectift the situation. It looks to me like IM have done all they can about the car, as for the licence, doesn't the new photocard licence do away with address details?
