Are my01 more upgradeable?
#1
Was talking to some bloke the other day in a pulsar. I was telling him how the turbo on the new model is slightly different and that it's larger then the old one. He then said "oh thats great it means you can upgrade it a lot more". I'm not an expert on engines but from what I've heard on this forum larger turbos can be upgraded more. So is this true or is it only for cars like cossie's.

Hi,
In General, the larger the turbo the more air it will flow. It will also be likely to be more efficient than a smaller turbo when the boost pressure is increased . Better turbo efficiency = less heat transferred to the intake charge as it is compressed = more air molecules + more fuel per cycle = more power. The intercooler will also have less work to do to reduce charge temps to an acceptable level.
Basically a larger turbo generally has more 'headroom' than a small one, but will usually suffer more lag.
I think the MY01 has the same Mitsubishi TD04 turbo that UK >MY97 had, but possibly with a different wheel or exhaust housing to improve airflow. It is still pretty tiddly though..
Cheers,
Alex
