very short gear throw

Noticed straight away when driving my my97 wagon that the gear shift is very very small, i went from a honda civic vti 1.8 to the scoob, and at first thought the honda had a short throw, it now feels like a mop in a bucket, but the scoob is very direct short throw...is this normal...??
2. the super chip thing.!!!
ok its to late because its already in !!, without any real reserch i spent the dosh, when i got the car back from the chipper, he told me that before he chipped it he test drove the car and was amazed how quick it was, infact the first thing he done was to make sure it wasent done already.
are some cars faster than others out of the box.??
