Spoke to a dealer yesterday & he said nothing would be known officially until Christmas but what he had heard implied a significant price hike, ie WRX wagon approaching 30 grand.

I got the impression "hopefully" he was not 100% certain what he was on about. I guess IM will probably wait to see what reaction the new shape gets before fixing the price, they never seem over keen on shifting lots of cars & will probably try & maximise profit on each one sold although I gather Fuji have anounced they want to go more into volume sales, hopefully IM will have their arm twisted.

If prices are hiked how about a group buy with a Japanese dealer, that should put them straight.

I can't think that Subaru would hike the price that much. The pricing is about right at the moment, although taking the WRX to below 20K again would make it better value for money(which was always one of its strongest points).

Subaru got the STI pricing spot on, it undercut the EVO 7, and the standard WRX was about £700 more than the outgoing model. The only time IMHO Subaru have made an error in pricing was with the P1, which really should have been 28-30K in the first place.

I would be surprised if they put the WRX above 24K

Neil, I agree it makes total sense, as I said I dont think he knew what he was on about, 30k buys an awful lot with other makes & to be honest, good as it maybe the Impreza aint in that league

Surely with the the WRX being beaten in all the group tests by the sub £20k Focus RS, (with std Brembos, 18's etc), I really think that subaru need to reduce the price to compete...

Dealers I've spoken to are in the same boat, but don't expect much of an increase. I'd be surprised if the prices were increased by more than £500-1000.

PS I seem to recall the Focus coming out very well against the Impreza, until they took it off the track! Doesn't seem to like the bumps

Spoke to some people and it seems that the STi will be @30K and the WRX will be roughly the same as it is now!

That would be £s. However, that would be the UK price, ie double what anyone else pays.

All I know is that the day after the anouncement of the new cosmetic changes on the Impreza, all of the un-sold bug eyes at my local dealer had £1000 pound off stickers on them.
I suppose someone will have to pay for this.

Tony

Edited to put the pound sign in.

30k for a WRX? What is IM thinking about? If that is the case then it will be an interesting situation, as parallel imports will cost over 1/3 less.

Before people start jumping up and down shouting "what are they thinking of", why not just apply a little logic like PolarbearIT.

1... Dealers have cars to shift that no-one wants in the face of a revised model that already people like the look of
2... They don't have huge margins to play with
3... They can talk up the old model, or talk down the new...

Which is it going to be?

I can't see IM announcing a price until a lot later on in this process.

Unless anyone knows better, this is all speculation.

Speculation warning:

oh, another thing: the STI already looks like it has the prodrive bits on it (wing, side skirts) so I wouldn't be surprised if the base model STI did rise in price to slightly above the current prodrive price, and the prodrive model disappeared...

Speculation warning 2:
...or the prodrive model actually got some prodrive performance bits on it rather than just tarting up

Nick.

They can't sell the STI with the PPP as a 'new' car as it won't pass the EU emissions regulations. They could supply the car with a 'voucher' to get the PPP done afterwards, but then people who don't want the PPP will want money back and it all becomes complicated.

Maybe the price point for the new STI will be 27.5K with all the prodrive stuff on as standard. That would make sense as it would'nt affect STI residuals too much, and they can claim that its added value to the model range.

I spoke to my local dealer and he said " any manufacturer that puts its prices up in the present climate wants their heads read"
I personally don't care cause that will make my MY02 STi worth more. I'm just concerned with the cost to change .
can't see a WRX being 30K no way its just a ploy to shift the bug eyes as stated above.

Cheers Jay

With the RS Focus getting a good write up and costing a fiver under 20K (GBP) then I think IM would be mad to raise the price of the standard WRX at all.

In fact they will loose a LOT of sales to Ford if they don't drop the price. In every write up I've seen so far the Focus come out top when compared to the standard WRX. Maybe the extra BHP in the my03 will make the difference.

Cheers, Ian.

Have to agree on paper the Focus looks good, but there's enough already been written to suggest that there's something horribly wrong with the front diff on a bumpy road - exactly the roads where the Impreza shines. Horses/courses etc.

IM have always, IMHO, overpriced the impreza. OK, it is "performance bargain of the last decade" according to Car, but look at what they cost in Japan, or Holland, or Belgium, or ...

The EU spec STI actually bought semi-parity in cost to the rest of Europe. You could only save 10-15% by importing from Holland , but it was still a good price.

The "standard" WRX is being written off by Evo, amongst others, as lacking the appeal of the old car, and states that the progression for those trading up from classic shapes is likely an STI. (I might be biased in reading this, but that's what I read). IM absolutely need to get the pricing right. In the current market of overproduction and oversupply of cars on a global scale, raising prices would by some definitions be a brave stake in the ground showing they believe in their product, or by other definitions be rather stupid.

I think they should DROP the price of the WRX, and keep the STI price about the same.

It'll be interesting to see what actually happens

Nick.

No Chiark thats not what I quite ment
Its just that if the MY03 STi is £30k for example then a 6mth old one will look good value at say 25k even if its the older model.
However if the MY03 is say 25k new then a 6 mth old one will have to be priced at say 20k. See my point.
