New to it - which mod first?
#1
Picking up my first Impreza Turbo soon, it's a 97my (standard uk) so thinking of the following:
1. gearknob/gaitor and steering wheel (with bag) to replace the rubber/plastic things.
Can anyone recommend somewhere in the Yorkshire area who could supply/fit?
2. some performance mods (not thinking too expensive but value for money), any advice appreciated.
cheers, O.

Hi Owen
Welcome to the board. If you want a decent gear know and gaitor, have a look at Nito's website
Not sure about the steering wheel.
After that - look at the usual things - 17" wheels, spoiler, de-cat exhaust, brakes - the list goes on Set yourself a budget and tell your insurance company!
Dawes device (manual boost controller) info here
Chris
Edited to say that Nito's site appears to be down at the moment.

Owen,
lemme know how you get on looking for a gaitor and stuff. I was browsing about Halifax and Bradford yesterday looking for the same kit and didn't come across anything decent(gotta sort out that hideous interior)... I'm new to the yorkshire area so at the moment my seach has been a few small local shops and <cringe> halfords (the assistant in halfords told me you cant buy gear stick gaitors seperately... tw@t).
cheers,
Marty

I always start off with then induction kit and then the exhaust. If you're just doing it purely for aesthetics then slap on a new spoiler and alloys and you'll transform the looks in your car.

A Dawes device is a MBC and might be £35 but anyone who runs one needs a few hundred quids worth of accurate gauges if they have any sense .
MBC = Manual boost controller

Actually its whoosh whoosh *clank* for me. Your gearbox would be the first to go before the engine from my experience.
p.s. in case you've forgotten, I'm running 21 psi on an MY93 WRX

Yup its a closed deck block hence why I'm a bit iffy when it comes to upgrading it. I want to sell her but I also would like to keep my engine reliability. But the gearbox is the only thing that I'd say is the achillies heel of it. If it weren't for that I'd say the Imprezas were the most perfect car.

Exhaust, but make sure you change not only the back box , but the centre cat (Still leagal as there is one at the front) and remove the resonator section also. This gives increase in power. Check out TSL motorsports website for prices etc (Approx £550)
Quick shift gearchange is also worth having (£350)
Depends on whether you want looks or power really. I've got both

Guys, thanks for all the info.
From what I can glean...
A Dawes seems good but ideally need some gauges so you don't wreck the engine?
Has anyone had the Phase 1 ECU upgrade from Power Engineering? Is it worth it? Should you have other mods at the same time?
Has anyone just fitted an ECUTek 1? Again, should you do other mods at the same time?
thanks again, O.

I am running a MY00 with TEK1. Upgrading to TEK2 or 3 v.soon.
TEK 1 is not a relevant upgrade for your car as it doesn't have the ****ty 802 ECU to start with and the TEK1 is really just designed to combat the 802's shortcomings.
Not even sure you can go down the TEK route with a MY97.
Get an exhaust first, for the noise if nothing else.

Wheels - from standard 15s to at least 16s
Good tyres (e.g., Toyos, S03s, F1's)
Eibachs and geometry setup for better handling
ITG Panel filter
Brakes
then
Power mods as discussed already
then
Ask yourself how old you are (how much self-respect you have
before
Tarting up e.g., spoiler,indicators etc
AND NEVER

i got a UK MY98 about a year ago, totally standard
about 6 months ago i got the bug and started modding it. what follows is the order and cost of what ive done SO far :
1.Miltek BB and Magnex CS w/o resonator - £80 s/h
2.Philips vision plus head and side light bulbs - £25 (now i can see)
3.subaru sti 4, 4 pots - £100 s/h
4.EBC discs, EBC reds (sh1te BTW), braided hoses, dot 5.1 - £450 fitted
5.Clear side-ies - £25
6.STi 4 spoiler - £100 s/h
7.Blitz SUS induction kit - £50 s/h
8.Boost gauge - £50 - now sold
9.Dawes device - £26 s/h
at this stage i did a RR at PE and got 261 bhp, 236 lB/ft torque at 1.0 bar
10.Forge VTA DV - £50 s/h
11.magnex downpipe - £190
12.prodrive geometry setup - £35 at micheldever tyres (bloke didnt know how much to charge me)
13.Ultralie boost gauge and AFR - £100
14.2 pod a-pillar pod - £70
15.clear front indicators - £30 s/h
16.Momo race air gear **** - £50
17.ferrodo DS2500 fast road pads - £150(now i can stop)
god knows what ive missed, the list is frikin endless
as you can see most of what ive got is second hand (s/h) from scoobynet, so there are some bargains to be had - just need to watch 'for sale' forum like a hawk
enjoy

Either a driving course or brakes as these 2 seem to always fail at some time or other..... oooooooops (and the brakes on earlier cars suck )
After the first 2 id go for an exhaust just to get the sound going or wheels if your car isnt fitted with 17's already
(and a nice bank manager who will lend you the money to cover the insurance when it goes up depending who your with that is )
