I lived there for a couple of years, and its fantasatic. Key thing is getting out there and doing things. Loads of sports facilities, water sports, gyms and countryside...if you can be bothered to get off you back side and do (which tends to be most peoples problem). Snowdome open now which is awsome. Drop me a line if you want the inside line on places to live. There are good and bad!

Cobblers, Oh strange northern person !
I use heathrow because I prefer scheduled flights, and flying long-haul on a plane the size of a toilet does not appeal to me.
Snob?......... Me?......... Never!

I agree but use gatwick (by train just over an hour from Harlington - M1 junction 12). Or Stanstead about 1 hour by car cross country. Both much more civilised than Heathrow!

No, that's just a rumour we spread to keep the undesirable element out
Looks like we'll have to think of another plan now
Welcome (in advance) see you at some of the local meets.

The truth is that you either love it or hate it.
Although it's lacking in the feeling of community that you'd find in some other places, it's not a bad place to live. Whatever your interests, you'll find something to suit you.
The biggest problem is that you need a car to get about, because the public transport is dreadful.
However, the Councils thing about speed bumps is begining to pee me off big time!

Which are the best places to live in Milton Keynes? I need to move closer to my Place of work (Hemel Hempstead), I drive from Northampton Every day, and its a bloody long way. Maybe I could afford to put fuel in a Subaru then, and get rid of the MR2, who knows?

I LIVE IN MILTON KEYNES!!!!!
The place is like one big f*ck off race track. Great for the car, even better for the bike.
I like the place these days. It's come a long way in the past few years, and is one of the fastest growing towns in europe (I made that up, but it could very well be true!).
Nightlife is a bit ****e, but Northampton is ok and not too far. Loads of restaurants, but the best ones are to be found in the surrounding villages (woburn etc).
....and there is rarely any traffic. Nearly every road has a 70mph limit with no speed cameras.
Nice areas to live are:
Woolstone - Windmill Hill - Caldecote - Kents Hill - Great Linford - Lakes Estate(joke)
There are loads of nice areas, all spread out.
So how do I find out about the local Scooby meets?

Dustbin'
You're not the only one, there's a fair few of us in the MK area.
I wouldn't agree with the race track bit. With all the roundabouts and dual carriageways, it's a bit 'point and shoot'.
There are also more unmarked police cars out there than you think.
Davyboy,
Where you want to live in MK depends on your budget (like everywhere). Some areas have a cross section of housing, and some areas are predominately of one or two sizes (3-4, 4-5 beds etc)
If you've got any questions, mail me.

Luton's the closest, both in time and distance (about 25 miles down the M1), but I'm not sure you'd call it an airport (bitch, bitch).
I'm afraid I always use Heathrow as my airport of choice, as it's only about 60-90 minutes away.

I live there so it's got to be good!
No traffic jams, no speed cameras (but unmarked Honda Civics etc)and Silverstone/Bedford autodrome nearby.
The speed bumps are only in the housing areas and personnally I think they need to be there but the connecting roads are all fast 60/70mph. There's also the Newport Pagnall bypass that Aston use for 'testing'.

Floyd,
I don't know about Aston Martin, but Simon and I used it for some P1 testing before the last Speed and Feed.
Re Unmarked vehicles, I used to work with the local Press, and found myself at the nick quite regularly. Consequently, I got know some of the cars/drivers quite well. Considering the numbers, I'm surprised more people aren't caught in MK.

Gastro,
I've lived there for 25 years.....
My parents moved up from Middlesex in 1976...
It's changed a little bit since then!
Don't believe the rubbish about it being awful - if it was that bad people wouldn't live here....
Regarding areas, MK is unusual as the planners quite like putting council estates next to quite posh areas so there is no large area which is very expensive or very cheap.
If you want expensive, look in some of the surrounding villages.
Bear in mind that they are planning to build a lot of new houses (20,000+ apparently) to the south-east of the city (J13 towards Bedford).
No traffic jams - ha ha ha. Around the City Centre is *VERY* busy during peak periods. The rest of the time it is pretty easy to get about.
As already mentioned, public transport is pretty poor so if you're bringing a partner, they will need to be able to drive/own a car.
Any questions, drop me a mail.
Thanks
Gavin

Gastro,
The Hospital isn't too far from the centre. However, it is surrounded by some of the less than popular estaes Netherfield, and Eaglestone to name but two.
If you're anything like the Doctors I used to work with, then the centre is probably too long a stagger home. I'd suggest you use cabs.
On the positive side there are one or two Consultants there who are Petrol Heads, so you should get on well.
When you get down here, let us know, and we'll drag you down to the next meet.
Cheers

I would say there are some very "diplomatic" answers in there - Netherfield is regarded as one of the roughest areas in MK. There has been a lot of trouble in the pub (which unfortunately would have to be the nearest to the hospital) in the past. I don't know whether it has been cleaned up in more recent times.
Unfortunately, all of the estates around the hospital have poor reputations at best. Coffee Hall / Beanhill / Eaglestone are better than Netherfield but not particularly nice residential areas.
Take lots of taxis to CMK.
Thanks

As you say Gavin, I have tried to be diplomatic. In the extreme actually.
Unfortunately, I have friends who live on a couple of those estates, and one never knows who's looking at the BBS.
I don't think the positioning of these estates near the hospital is 'unfortunate', rather fortunate, or even good planning. There's nothing like being close enough to drag yourself to A&E.

Josh,
Point taken about people's feelings but I think everyone who lives here has a fair idea of the desirability of individual areas.
When my parents moved us up to MK in 1976 we lived on Netherfield for 18 months. We then lived on Eaglestone for 10 years so no "airs and graces" here.
There was a MK meet over a year ago at Caldecotte Lake - we should arrange another one (you can even bring your mates - I might know them)!
Thanks
Gavin
