Newbie to the Scooby
#1
I have just purchased my first Scooby, may i say it has surpassed any of my previous expectations. Can anyone offer advice regarding piston slap, my97 uk turbo having only covered 35k has slight piston slap upon start up, my local dealer informs me that this is a common problem and not to be concerned, explaining that the alloy pistons before they warm tend to rattle in the bore, creating the noise. Is piston slap anything to worry about, sorry for my ignorance but my knowledge of car engines is very limited. Can anyone also offer any advice regarding care for your scooby apart from the usual service schedules.
Kind regards
Mark

Piston slap IS a big worry.
If you think you have it, take the car back to the dealer and say, please fix, ta.
(there is a link under engine/gearbox of what piston slap sounds like).
Its a known problem, mainly on MY98's, you can live with it but your engine wont
The fix now is a lot less hassle than it use to be though, where as they use to give you a new short engine (pretty much a total rebuild) they just replace no3 piston now i believe.
If its under subaru warranty dont worry about it, just bug your dealer to death, they can be hard going if not go to another dealer and get them to sort it

One last quick one for you though, shove fully synth oil in there and dont rag your car for the first 4 or 5 miles, it takes that long to warm the oil up, and definately dont go by the water temp guage!!
(shoves mobil1 fully synth motor sport in my MY00 turbo, 15w50 )
